Calgary, AB - The Calgary Roughnecks were defeated by the Colorado Mammoth 8-7 Thursday night in Denver, in game one of a three game series to determine who moves forward in the NLL Playoffs. Game two is scheduled for Saturday, May 12 at 7:30pm at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
The first quarter was a defensive battle which saw only two goals fall, both from Tanner Cook to allow the Roughnecks a 2-0 lead to start the game. Zach Currier opened the second quarter scoring with a transition goal, before Colorado tallied their first of the evening to get the Mammoth on the board. Jeff Cornwall answered for Calgary 11 seconds later to keep the visitors ahead by three. Colorado added two goals to come within reach of tying things up, before Seth Van Schepen scored his first ever playoff goal for Calgary to leave things at 5-3 heading into halftime.
Three straight goals from the Mammoth, two on the powerplay and one short-handed, saw them take their first lead of the game at the start of the third quarter. Dan Taylor brought the visitors back up to 6-6, and then came back to score another goal which allowed the Roughnecks to take the lead heading into the final frame. Four penalties in the final quarter allowed the Mammoth two power play goals taking the score to 8-7, with Calgary unable to make another comeback run.
Josh Currier (3a) and Tanner Cook (2g, 1a) both ended the night with three points. Zach Currier finished his night with two points (1g, 1a) and 11 loose balls. Christian Del Bianco made 42 saves from 50 shots, with the Colorado Mammoth outshooting the Calgary Roughnecks 50-43.
