DENVER – The Colorado Mammoth chose former University of Maryland defenseman Lee Zink with its first selection in the National Lacrosse League entry draft on Tuesday night. Zink, a third-round choice (29th overall), was an All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection in 2004, and helped lead Maryland to the NCAA quarterfinals.

The Mammoth used its final three selections on local talent, picking former University of Denver players Cory Vann (fourth round, 40th overall) and Andrew Huelskoetter (Fifth, 52nd) and former Colorado State player Mark Plonkey (Sixth, 63rd).

Zink, 23, is a hard-hitting, aggressive defenseman. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound native of Rowayton, Conn., was a two-time All-American at Maryland and team captain in 2004. He played for the Baltimore Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse this summer.

"Lee is a big, tough, strong, left-handed defender that fills a need for the Mammoth," Colorado Mammoth general manager Steve Govett said. "He's probably the best American defender available in the draft."

The Mammoth chose another defenseman with its second pick of the draft, selecting former University of Denver All-American Cory Vann. The 23-year-old native of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., started all 14 games for the Pioneers in 2004 and led the team in caused turnovers. The 6-foot, 183-pound team captain also led Denver in penalty minutes.

Huelskoetter, a 5-foot-9, 179-pound native of St. Louis, was a gritty midfielder for the Pioneers. The 22-year-old recorded three goals and three assists in 11 games last season. The Mammoth selected a true local product in Plonkey with its final selection of the draft. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound graduate of Chatfield High School, was an All-American at Colorado State.
