Gait signs with Mammoth, announces season-end retirement

DENVER – The most celebrated player in the history of lacrosse has signed with the Colorado Mammoth for the 2005 National Lacrosse League season – and it will be his last, the team announced today.

Gait, 37, owns nearly every record in league history and has led the Mammoth since the team arrived in Denver from Washington in 2002.

"This game, this team and this town have been great to me," Gait said. "I want every game I play in the upcoming season to be a chance for me to say thanks to fans across the league."

The former Syracuse University star has amassed a collection of records and accolades unrivaled in professional lacrosse:

Most career regular season goals – 563 (158 games played)
Most career regular season points – 1,010
Most career postseason goals – 65 (21 games played)
Most goals in a single game – 10 (Jan. 9, 1999 vs. Toronto)
Most goals in a single season – 61 (2003)
Most points in a single game – 14 (10 goals, four assists – Jan. 9, 1999 vs. Toronto)
Single season goals leader – League-leading seven times.
Single season points leader – League-leading seven times (tied with Buffalo's John Tavares)
First Team All-Pro – League-leading 14 times
Named league MVP a record six times
Rookie of the Year in 1991

"Gary is a very special player and he means a great deal to the sport and this team," Mammoth general manager Steve Govett said. "Colorado has the best lacrosse fans in the league and we're all excited that they'll be able to see Gary play for one more season."

The Mammoth opens its season Jan. 1 at Pepsi Center against the defending NLL champion Calgary Roughnecks.
