Stealth Select Princeton Standout Ryan Boyle in 2004 Entry Draft

SAN JOSE - San Jose Stealth Managing Director, General Manager and Head Coach Johnny Mouradian selected forward Ryan Boyle in the first round (third overall) of the 2004 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft.

Boyle, 22, was the second overall pick in the 2004 Major League Lacrosse Entry Draft by the Rochester Rattlers. He was traded to the Philadelphia Barrage and helped the team win its first MLL title in his rookie season. Boyle was named MLL Rookie of the Year after he scored 45 points (17 goals and 28 assists).

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound native of Hunt Valley, Maryland enjoyed an outstanding collegiate career playing for Princeton University. He was selected third team All-American in his freshman season, second team All-American his sophomore year, and first team All-American his junior and senior seasons. In addition he was named Ivy League Rookie of the Year as a freshman and Ivy League Player of the Year his sophomore and senior year.

In his celebrated career at Princeton, Boyle notched 232 points (70 goals and 162 assists), placing him second all-time in school history for points and assists.

With their second pick, the Stealth selected defenseman Eric Martin out of Salisbury University. The 6-foot-2, 215 pound native of Norfolk, Virginia won the William C. Schmeisser Award as the Division III Defenseman of the Year, as well as the Iroguois National Award as the overall Division III Player of the Year, while leading his team to their fifth NCAA Championship in his senior campaign.

Mike Powell was selected third by the Stealth (second round, 17th overall). Powell was a four-time first team All-American for Syracuse as well as the Tewaarton Trophy winner, given to the nation's top player, his sophomore and senior seasons. He led his team in scoring all four years and ranks first all-time in scoring at Syracuse. In his senior season, he notched 89 points (47 goals and 42 assists).

"Guys like Boyle, Martin and Powell are superstars," said Mouradian. "We look forward to having them be a big part of our team in the future."

University of Delaware forward Matt Alrich was taken in the third round (24th overall). Alrich was named first team All-Colonial Athletic Association after leading Delaware in scoring for the second straight year (34 goals and 12 assists). He finished his career with 103 points (83 goals and 20 assists).

With their fifth pick (third round, 28th overall), the Stealth selected Andrew Roth from Cortland State. He was named first team All-American after a senior season in which he scored 31 goals and added 10 assists. Roth served as team captain at Cortland in his junior and senior seasons.

The Stealth also selected St. Ignatius High School of San Francisco's Drew Virk. Virk, a defensive midfielder, was chosen in the fifth round (51st overall). He won 50 of 89 faceoffs in his senior year at the University of Maryland.

Mouradian is very happy with the Stealth's draft.

"We really focused on brining U.S. collegiate players into the fold this year," he said. "Doug Locker (assistant general manager) has done a great job researching players who will have the opportunity to be part of the mix."
