Louisville Bats News Release
Louisville, KY - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre entered the four-game set with Louisville as the hottest team in the International League, not losing more than one game to any team all season. The defending Governor's Cup champions leave Louisville, losing three out of four games to the Bats. In front of 6,206, the Bats became the first team all year to win a series from the Yankees, riding on starter Matt Maloney's back, Louisville defeated Scranton Wilkes-Barre 3-0 in the finale.
Maloney (3-1, 2.89) was nothing short of dominant, throwing seven innings of shutout baseball. He set the tone by striking out the first four batters he faced and was in a groove all night long. He allowed only four hits, striking out a season-high ten batters, en route to a victory for the Bats.
Josh Towers (0-1, 9.00) took the loss in his first outing for the Yankees, going 4.1 innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs, while striking out one.
The Yankees had their first scoring chance in the top of the third inning. Chris Stewart started with a single. After Maloney struck out Luis Nunez, leadoff man Doug Bernier singled to put runners on first and second. John Rodriguez was then hit by a fastball on the right pinkie finger. (He would leave the game after the half inning.) However, Maloney battled back to get Todd Linden to ground out to third baseman Wilkin Castillo to end the inning.
After stranding leadoff doubles in both the third and fourth innings, Danny Dorn and Danny Richar broke through for the Bats in the fifth. They each hit solo home runs off of Yankees' starter Towers, giving the Bats the lead 2-0.
Dorn, who finished 2-for-4, wasn't finished for the Bats. He came to the plate again in the sixth inning, but this time it was with Yankees' reliever Zach Kroenke on the mound. Dorn didn't seem to mind at all, as he homered for the second time in the game, this time a towering 400-foot shot to right field, giving the Bats their final margin of 3-0. It marked the sixth time that Dorn has hit two home runs in one game in his career and it was his fourth home of the season.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre didn't go quietly in the ninth inning, bringing the tying run to the plate. Todd Linden led off the inning with a single. Bats' reliever Carlos Fisher retired the next two batters before allowing a double to Austin Jackson. However, Chris Malec grounded out to Fisher to end the game.
Fisher pitched two innings to earn his second save of the year for the Bats. He allowed only two hits, while striking out two batters.
Drew Stubbs, recently named International League co-player of the week, extended his hitting streak to seven games in the win with a double in the fifth inning. Stubbs has now doubled in five straight games.
The Bats will now hit the road for an eight-game stretch, which will begin tomorrow night in Durham at 7:05 p.m. Probable pitchers for that match-up will be RHP Sam LeCure (2-2, 3.07) for the Bats against the highly touted Tampa Bay Rays prospect LHP David Price (1-4, 4.74) for the Bulls.
