January 2, 2012 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release
QUACK TRACKS
Silver
The Mallards enter 2012 in sole possession of second place in the Central Hockey League's Turner Conference. The Mallards are six points behind first place Fort Wayne and two points ahead of third place Rapid City.
Streaking
The Mallards have won four straight games for the first time this season. Three of those four victories have come by a single goal; two of the four have come in the shootout.
Decembrists
The Mallards went 11-2-1 in December, matching Fort Wayne for the best record in the league for the month. The Mallards outscored opponents 52-32 in December. For the month, the Flock went 6-1-0 on the road and 5-1-1 on home ice.
On the 0
The Mallards have won seven of their last eight road games. The Flock is 10-5-0 on the road this season and is tied for the league lead in away wins.
Home Cooking
The Mallards have won three straight home games and lost just once in regulation (5-1-1) in their last seven home tilts.
Workin' Overtime
By defeating Dayton last Saturday, the Mallards improved to 3-1 in games decided in the shootout this season. Quad City is also now 6-1 in games settled in either overtime or the shootout. Three of the Mallards' last six games and five of their last 11 contests have gone to overtime.
Power Play
The Mallards have climbed to second in the league on the power play (23.6 percent) after converting eight of their last 20 advantages. The Mallards have scored at least two power play goals in each of their last three games and have scored nine of their last 12 non-shootout goals on the power play.
Penalty Kill
The Mallards now rank tenth in the CHL in penalty killing (81.8 percent) after surviving 12 of their opponents' last 13 power plays.
Best Shot
The Mallards remain the league leaders in shots on goal (37.5 per game) after pumping at least 40 shots on net in each of their last four games and a total of 12 times this season.
Little Big Man
All-Star starter Brandon Marino (18-22-40) leads the CHL in goals, is tied for the league lead in power play goals (8), tied for second in points and shorthanded goals (3) and tied for tenth in assists. Marino leads the Mallards in goals, assists, points, power play goals and shorthanded goals. He recorded at least two points in each of the Mallards' three games last week (3-4-7); has matched team season bests by scoring each of his last four games (four goals total) and by notching points in seven consecutive games (6-6-12); and collected points in 13 of 14 outings in December (10-11-21).
Brown Out, Take 1
Like Marino, Jared Brown (10-21-31) has equaled a club season best by registering points in each of his last seven games (3-8-11). Among CHL rookies, Brown is tied for the lead in assists, tied for second in points and is tied for fifth in goals.
Brown Out, Take 2
Goaltender David Brown, who rejoined the Mallards just before Christmas after splitting the start of the campaign between the Abbotsford Heat (AHL) and Las Vegas Wranglers (ECHL), has won three straight games and gone 3-1-0 overall in four outings with a 2.45 goals against average and a .914 save percentage.
Welcome Back
Goaltender Brad Fogal made a career high 42 saves Saturday night in Dayton in what was the rookie's first start since December 14 and also turned aside all five Gems penalty shots in the shootout.
Outshining Gems
The Mallards swept last weekend's home-and-home series with Dayton and have now won four straight games against the Gems after dropping their first two meetings of the season with Brian Gratz's squad. Last Friday night's 6-1 win over Dayton was the Mallards' most lopsided victory of the season.
Head-to-Head
The Mallards and IceMen tomorrow night meet for the first time this season. The Flock went 7-4-0 against Evansville last year. The Mallards and Thunder split their first two meetings. Quad City on December 23 earned its first ever win in five tries against Wichita, downing the Thunder 5-4 in a shootout. The Mallards have gone 2-1-1 in four games against Missouri and have won the last two meetings between the two clubs.
Ins and Outs
Defenseman Taylor Vichorek (illness) missed the Mallards' last two games. Defenseman Justin Hofstetter was activated from CHL leave last Tuesday. The Mallards last Monday traded forward Tyler Sheldrake to Tulsa in exchange for future considerations. Also last Monday, goaltender David McKee was recalled to the American Hockey League's Peoria Rivermen.
