Rockford, Ill. - The Rockford IceHogs failed to tally a third period goal Wednesday, experiencing a disappointing loss against the Quad City Mallards, 3-2 at the Rockford MetroCentre before a crowd of 2,956. The game marked the final meeting between the Hogs and Mallards at the MetroCentre during the 2003-2004 season.

In the first period, Mallards center Jeff Williams slipped a surprise goal in past Hogs goaltender Ronnie Vogel just 14 seconds into playing time, the quickest goal scored against the Hogs in franchise history. The IceHogs struck back valiantly with a short handed goal by winger Dave Paradise, assisted by defensemen Kenzie Homer on a Mallards power play at 6:45.

The Hogs pulled ahead three minutes into the second period with a goal scored by rookie center Maris Ziedins, assisted by Justin Cardwell and Paradise. The Mallards then notched a power play goal while enjoying a 5-on-3 advantage, when winger Mike Thompson knocked home a rebound past Vogel at 19:12 of the period, tying the score at two.

Quad City grabbed the lead at 5:15, when winger Marty Goulet, assisted by Frederick Jobin and rookie Justin Brown, walked in alone on Vogel, slipping one past the IceHogs goalie, bringing the score to 3-2. Despite pulling Vogel, the Hogs proved unable to make a late comeback with the extra skater.

Vogel finished the night with 32 saves, while Mallards goalie Jeff Reynaert turned away 24 Rockford shots to pick up the win. Quad City finished the night 1-for-7 on the power play and the Hogs went 0-for-3.

Next Home Game: Wednesday, March 31 vs. Muskegon Fury. Game time is 7:05 p.m. The Fury make their final stop to Rockford while Wednesday is the final WXRX $1 Beer Night with the Rock Station and the IceHogs.
