
Mallards Sign First Overall Pick Brown

Moline, IL â The Quad City Mallards have signed defenseman Justin Brown, the first overall pick in the North American Amateur Draft, it was announced Wednesday by President/General Manager Howard Cornfield.
The 23-year-old made the trip with the Mallards to Rockford for their Wednesday night contest and assisted on Marty Goulet's game-winning goal in the third period. Brown, who attended Michigan Tech, had nine points (1 goal, 8 assists) during his senior season, with 60 penalty minutes in his team's 38 games.
"I'm excited to be here," Brown said. "I'm looking forward to getting on the ice and contributing for the Mallards."
The 6-foot-1, 205-pound defenseman was an ironman for the Huskies, missing only one of the 150 games Michigan Tech played during his four-year career. He scored 11 goals and 48 assists during that time. He was named to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) All-Academic Team during his sophomore and junior seasons, majoring in finance and putting together a 3.67 grade point average.
Prior to his four-year career with the Huskies, the Eagan, Minn. native spent three years with the Twin City Vulcans of the USHL. His teammates with the Vulcans included NHLer Tim Jackman, University of Minnesota standout Matt Koalska, and current Mallard teammate Drew Otten. Over his three seasons, he racked up 50 points from the blueline in 156 games.
The Mallards will return home this weekend for contests on Friday against Fort Wayne for a 7:00 contest and on Sunday against Rockford at 4:00. Sunday will be i-wireless Family Fun Day Sunday, and the movie to be shown this week is School of Rock, starring Jack Black.
