Mallards Sign Cole Bassett

Moline, IL – The Quad City Mallards have signed rookie forward Cole Bassett from Minnesota State University-Mankato. He is expected to be available when the Mallards host the Flint Generals today at 4:00 p.m. Team President/General Manager Howard Cornfield made the announcement today.

Bassett ranked seventh in the nation and led Minnesota State University-Mankato with 12 power play goals last season. He also led the Mavericks with 84 penalty minutes while scoring 30 points in 39 games, on 14 goals and 16 assists. This season, he scored five goals, including a pair of two-goal games, in 18 contests.

Bassett, a 22-year-old Minnesota native, was a college teammate of ex-Mallards T.J. Guidarelli and Jesse Rooney and current Fort Wayne player Ryan Severson. Mallards defenseman Andy Fermoyle also went to Mankato, but graduated in 2000, prior to Bassett's freshman year of 2000-01.

Prior to college, Bassett played for the U.S. Junior National Team that won the Eastern Division while competing in the United States Hockey League, the top junior league in the U.S. He spent two seasons with USA Hockey's National Team Development Program and was a member of the USA Under 18 World Championship team.

The Mallards host the Flint Generals today on i wireless Family Fun-Day Sunday. Game time is 4:00 p.m. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. for a showing of the classic 1968 film "Planet of the Apes," starring Charlton Heston, on the giant video screen. There is open skating from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. Meet "The Hulk" in person!
