Mallards Rally But Fall to Wichita in Shootout

MOLINE, Ill. - David Brown made 32 saves in regulation and overtime and turned aside four of five Quad City Mallard penalty shots while Matt Robinson and Matt Summers converted for the Wichita Thunder, who survived a spirited rallied by the host Mallards to claim a 3-2 shootout win Friday night .

Only Gabriel Levesque scored in the shootout for the Mallards, who did earn one point after battling back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game in regulation.

Mike Hellyer solved Brown for the first time and cut the gap to 2-1 by pouncing on a rebound at 2:31 of the third period. At 10:50 of the third, Gergo Nagy scored the tying goal from the slot.

The Mallards found themselves in need of two third period goals after the Thunder scored once in each of the first two periods. R.G. Flath's power play tip-in gave the Thunder a 1-0 lead at 4:34 of the first period. Dustin Donaghy buried Jared Walker's centering pass to double the Wichita advantage at 12:56 of the second period.

Though the Mallards finally broke through against Brown in the final frame of regulation, the former Quad City goaltender was at this busiest and most spectacular down the stretch, making 16 saves over the final 25 minutes to set the stage for Wichita's success in the shootout.

The Mallards return to action on home ice tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. against the Arizona Sundogs. The Mallards, who are in their first season as an affiliate of the National Hockey League's Minnesota Wild and the American Hockey League's Iowa Wild, tomorrow night will wear special edition affiliate jerseys. Those jerseys will go up for bid in a live auction immediately following the game to benefit the Genesis Health Services Foundation's Flu-Free QC program. Also tomorrow night, the first 1,000 fans ages 12 and under through the doors will receive free Mallards youth replica jerseys courtesy of Scott County Family Y and Two Rivers YMCA. After tomorrow night's game fans are invited to join the Mallards for a postgame party at Old Chicago in Bettendorf.
