Madison Mallards News Release
Madison, WI - July 18, 2014. The Madison Mallards (12-6, 30-21) took down the Willmar Stingers (10-8, 32-16) in game one of their doubleheader today at the "Duck Pond."
The Mallards scored four runs in the fifth inning, three coming off designated hitter Pete Alonso's (Florida) double with the bases loaded to aid in the 8-2 victory. Mallards starter A.J. Bogucki (North Carolina) tossed six innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out seven to receive the win.
Stingers starter T.J. Whidby (University of Texas-Arlington) lasted six innings in the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits.
Alonso hit a solo jack in the first inning, his 12th of the year and third in the past two days, to break open the scoring. He finished 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI. Center fielder Alex Bacon (North Florida) added a two RBI double in the second to put the Mallards up 3-0 and shortstop Trace Tam Sing (Washington State) hit a three run homer to bring the Mallards tally to seven in the fifth.
Stingers left fielder Casey Hughston (Alabama) had a two RBI single in the fourth to give the Stingers their only two runs.
The Mallards added one run in the seventh to go up 8-2 before reliever Devin Over (Connecticut) closed out the Stingers in the bottom of the frame.
Slated to start game two for the Mallards is righty Chris Oakley (North Carolina). Oakley has split time starting and coming out of the bullpen for the Mallards this year, and he will get his fourth start today after his last appearance, where he threw one inning in relief, allowing one run on one hit while striking out two in a 6-5 loss to the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters.
The Mallards travel to Kenosha tomorrow to begin a two game series against the Kenosha Kingfish at 6:05 pm. After the conclusion of the series, the Mallards are off for the Northwoods League All-Star Break until next Thursday, when they resume play in a home-and-home series against the Lakeshore Chinooks.
The Mallards play one in Mequon on Thursday at 6:35 pm and return to the "Duck Pond" on Friday for a 7:05 pm game.
Friday is Jay Hazen Dentistry for Madison Muskies Turn Back the Clock Night with a Toothbrush Giveaway. It is Badger Bowl Bowling Appreciation Night, as well as Bark in the Park, where fans can bring their pooch to the ballpark!
