Mallards Game Day

November 20, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release

Last Night Brett Stern broke a 2-2 tie late in the third period and the Wheeling Nailers- for whom Adam Krause provided a goal and two assists- held on for a 3-2 win after the host Mallards' Justin Kovacs- who had already tied the score once earlier in the third- hit the post as time expired.

Back-to-Back The Mallards have dropped their last two games. A 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Komets Friday night in Fort Wayne preceded last night's loss. This marks just the second time this season the Mallards have suffered back-to-back regulation setbacks. The Mallards started the season with a pair of losses to Fort Wayne October 14 and October 15.

Drought The Mallards today bid to avoid a third consecutive regulation loss. The Mallards last lost at least three straight in regulation when they endured a four-game regulation losing streak between January 17 and January 29 of the last season.

Splitsville? The Mallards today go for a split of their two-game set with the Nailers.

The Mallards today play the third of three games in three nights and the third of six in nine nights. The Mallards will play three times in three nights seven times this season. The Mallards last season went 4-3-1 when playing for the third time in three nights.

Despite last night's loss, the fourth-place Mallards remain one point ahead of the Wichita Thunder and Kalamazoo Wings, who are tied for fifth place in the Central Division. Both Wichita and Kalamazoo also lost last night. The Thunder fell to Alaska while the Wings were beaten by Toledo. The Mallards are three points behind the third-place Komets, who were idle last night.

Last night's defeat halted the Mallards' four-game home regulation unbeaten streak. Yesterday evening marked the first time the Mallards have fallen in regulation on home ice since their opening night loss to Fort Wayne.

The Mallards will return to the road Wednesday night in Cincinnati against the Cyclones. The Mallards are two games over .500 despite having been outscored 34-31. The Mallards are- along with Cincinnati- one of just two ECHL clubs who have posted a winning record while giving up more goals than they have scored. Last night's loss was the Mallards' fifth regulation defeat of the season but just their second at the hands of an opponent other than Fort Wayne. The Mallards were first beaten in 60 minutes by a foe other than the Komets when they suffered a 4-1 loss to the Cyclones November 3 in Cincinnati.

The Mallards rank fourth in the ECHL in goals against (2.6 per game). While the Mallards have given up three goals or fewer in ten of their first 13 games, they have now allowed three or more goals in back-to-back games for the first time since the first two games of the season. The Mallards rank twenty-third in the league in goals per game. The Mallards score 2.3 times per outing, the lowest average for any ECHL club with a winning record. The Mallards have totaled just five goals over their last three games. The Mallards have been outscored 5-2 in the third period over the last two nights. Despite that fact, the third remains the only period in which the Mallards have outscored the opposition. They have scored 14 third period goals and allowed ten while they have been outscored 23-17 over the first two periods.

The Mallards lost last night despite scoring first, ending a streak of six straight wins in games in which they open the scoring. The Mallards last night fell after producing the first goal for the first time since they took a 1-0 lead in their October 14 season opener against Fort Wayne only to suffer a 6-2 defeat.

By allowing 48 shots last night, the Mallards not only set a team single game season high but also gave up more shots than they have in any game since the Brampton Beast piled up 49 shots on November 9, 2014 in Brampton on the way to defeating the Mallards 4-3 in a shootout. The Mallards last night surrendered more shots in regulation than they have in any game since joining the ECHL for the 2014-15 season. The Mallards were a member of the Central Hockey League the last time they gave up as many shots in regulation as they allowed yesterday evening: on December 13, 2013, Ty Rimmer stopped all 48 Rush shots in a 2-0 Mallard victory in Rapid City. The Mallards last allowed more than 48 shots in regulation on February 27, 2010 while in the International Hockey League when the host Dayton Gems hurled 55 shots at Kyle Jones in the Mallard crease en route to edging the Flock 3-2. The Mallards have allowed 87 shots over the last two nights and have surrendered at least 39 shots not only in each of their last two outings but also in three of their last four games and in four of their last six tilts- after holding foes to 30 shots or fewer in each of their first seven games. The Mallards rank fourteenth in the ECHL in shots against (30.9.per game) and twentieth in shots taken (30.3). By scoring last night, Kovacs moved into a tie with Alex Petan for the team lead in goals (5). Kovacs also leads the Mallards in points (13).

Michael Parks opened the scoring just one minute and twenty-four seconds into last night's game with his second goal in as many evenings- he scored the lone Mallard goal Friday in Fort Wayne- his second goal of the season, his second career goal and his first career power play goal. Parks has provided two of the three goals the Mallards have scored in their last two games after a lower body injury kept him out of the prior five games and eight of the previous nine. Parks has not waited around this weekend: he scored 18 seconds into the third period Friday night- the Mallards' earliest goal in any period this season- before finding the net 84 seconds into the opening period last night.
