Mallards Fall to Wheeling

MOLINE, Ill. - Josh Shalla scored and added an assist and Cody Wydo provided what proved to be the game winning goal with just 9.5 seconds left in the second period as the Wheeling Nailers (9-4-1) defeated t he host Quad City Mallards (7-6-1) 3-2 Sunday.

The Nailers overturned a 2-1 deficit with a pair of goals late in the second. Michael Webster's solo rush tied the score at two at 16:44 and set stage for Wydo to bury the deciding goal from the doorstep just before the horn.

It was the Mallards who had battled from behind with back-to-back goals in the first period after Shalla gave Wheeling a 1-0 lead from the slot four and 36 seconds into the game. Sam Warning tied the score with a wrist shot from the right wing circle just under a minute and a half later. The Mallards were on the power play when Pavel Jenys' tip-in broke the 1-1 deadlock at 16:33 of the first, but when the Nailers grabbed the for a second time they made it count.

The Mallards return to action on the road Wednesday night against the Cincinnati Cyclones. The Mallards next play at home Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Indy Fuel. The Mallards' match-up with the Fuel also brings the return of $2 Dog/$2 Beer Night presented by 97X. Fans can enjoy $2 hot dogs and beers from iWireless Center concession stands during every Friday Mallards home game.
