Mallards Clinch Playoff Berth with Overtime Win

MOLINE, Ill. (March 19, 2013) - Mike Monfredo scored at 2:23 of overtime to give the host Quad City Mallards a playoff-clinching 4-3 win over the Denver Cutthroats Tuesday night.

The Mallards, who began the night needing just one point to secure a postseason berth, had actually locked up that playoff spot when regulation finished with the score tied- a state of affairs that guaranteed Quad City and Denver a single point apiece. A deadlock after sixty minutes also meant the Cutthroats, who entered the evening tied for sixth place with the Mallards, likewise guaranteed themselves a seat at the playoff table. The Mallards will open the best-of-seven opening round of the playoffs next week on a date to be announced against an opponent still to be determined.

Monfredo provided the game winner with a one timer from the top of the left wing circle. That goal capped off a roller coaster evening that had earlier seen the Mallards squander a 3-0 lead.

Denver's rally started with a Jamie McQueen power play goal from the high slot at 15:59 of the second period. Michael Trebish's blue line blast cut the margin to 3-2 at 3:42 of the third period. The Cutthroats were again on the man advantage when Joel Chouinard rifled in the game tier at 11:41 of the third.

The Cutthroats found themselves in need of a comeback after the Mallards ripped of three goals in just over five second period minutes. It was the Mallards who were on the power play when Mickey Lang buried Mike Hellyer's cross-crease pass to give Quad City a 1-0 advantage at 8:32 of the second. At 10:51, Jason Kostadine jammed in the second Mallard goal. The gap widened to three when Jason Dixon's centering pass was accidentally deflected home by the Cutthroats' Joel Chouinard at 13:37 of the middle frame, but the Mallards would need one more goal in order to finally claim victory.

With the win, the Mallards took over sole possession of sixth place in the Central Hockey League and climbed to a season high five games over .500 (31-26-6, 68 points).

The Mallards return to action at home Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Bloomington Blaze. Friday evening will also see the Mallards will team with John Deere for the team's annual John Deere Community Night. Fans who wear green to Friday's game to show their support for John Deere and the Mallards- and bring a "Green Out" to the i wireless Center- can purchase tickets to that game for just $10 at the i wireless Center box office. Friday is also another $1 Dog/$1 Beer College Night. All fans will be able to purchase hot dogs and beer for just $1 at i wireless Center concession stands through the end of the second intermission. In addition, college students can purchase tickets to the game for just $10 in person at the i wireless Center box office.

The ticket office is open weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and on game days from 10:00 a.m. until the start of the second period.
