Mallards Bullpen Holds Down Fort for Fifth Win in a Row
June 22, 2018 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release
Wausau Wis. - The Madison Mallards (19-5) continued their winning ways with a 10-6 victory over the Wisconsin Woodchucks (6-18) on Friday night in Wausau, winning 10-6. Madison swept the series and has now won five in a row.
Trevor Boone (Oklahoma State) gave the Mallards a 3-0 lead in the second on a three-run home run bomb, his second round-tripper in consecutive games. The lead was short-lived, however, and after five Woodchucks crossed the plate, the first of five Mallards relievers circled the wagons in the bottom half of the second.
TURNING POINT
Madison's offense fought back for four runs in the top of the third and a 7-5 lead. The bullpen never gave up the lead. Five Mallards relievers yielded only one run in 7 and one-third innings to keep the Woodchucks down. With the tying run on third base and only one out in the fifth inning, Leon Hunter (North Carolina A&T) came on and struck out five Woodchucks with runners in scoring position. Hunter earned the win for his stellar relief work. Three insurance runs in the eighth resulted in the final 10-6 score.
TOP MALLARDS
- Trevor Schwecke (UW Milwaukee) had three hits, a stolen base and a RBI
- Justice Bigbie (Western Carolina) came off the bench in the eighth inning to deliver a bases-loaded pinch hit two-RBI rocket single up the middle.
- Carson Ragsdale (South Florida) ended the game striking out three Woodchucks in the bottom of the ninth inning
NEXT UP
After a quick turnaround in Madison, the Mallards have an early bus departure for Kalamazoo for two important road games against the second place Growlers (18-6). The Growlers have stayed close on the heels of the red-hot Mallards by winning ten in a row. Saturday's game one begins at 6:35 pm CST. First pitch Sunday is set for 2:05 pm CST.
