Quad City Mallards News Release
ALLEN, Texas (March 6, 2012) - David McKee made 26 saves, Mickey Lang provided a pair of early goals just 15 seconds apart and Jason Kostadine scored what proved to be the game winner as the Quad City Mallards built a 3-0 lead before holding off a third period comeback bid to defeat the host Allen Americans 3-2 Tuesday night. With the win, the fifth place Mallards improve to 32-23-2 (66 points) and remain two points behind fourth place Rapid City in the race for the final Turner Conference playoff spot.
Lang scored twice in 15 seconds early in the first period to give the Mallards a 2-0 lead. Lang opened the scoring when his blue line blast broke off Allen goaltender Rejean Beauchemin and trickled over the goal line at 2:50 of the first. Mere moments later, Lang fired Brandon Marino's centering pass in under the cross bar.
Kostadine extended the Mallard lead to 3-0 by burying the puck in a goalmouth scramble at 2:31 of the second period.
Victory, however, would not come easy for the Mallards as Allen battled back with a pair of third period goals. Colton Yellow Horn swooped into the goalmouth and handed the puck off to Jim McKenzie who roofed it from point blank range to get the Americans on the scoreboard for the first time at 4:54 of the third. At 10:52, Allen was on the power play when Dylan King's drive from the point cut the Mallard lead to 3-2.
McKee and the Mallard bounced back to hold off the Americans the rest of the way- even when Allen created a series quality chances after pulling Beauchemin for an extra attacker with just over a minute and a half remaining.
Marino assisted on each of Lang's goal to reach 79 points on the season and pull within a single point of joining league leader Todd Robinson as the second player in the Central Hockey League to reach the 80-point plateau this year.
