Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors have started the second half of the Ontario Hockey League season in fine fashion.

Jordan Mayer had two goals and an assist ? including the game-winner with 56 seconds left - and Jamie Wise also scored twice to lead the Majors to a 6-4 win over the Guelph Storm to kick off the second half of the OHL regular season Wednesday night at the Sleeman Centre.

Mika Partanen added a goal and an assist and Brett Foy scored the other Mississauga goal as the Majors improved to 17-14-1-3 with their third straight victory, moving into sole possession of sixth place in the Eastern Conference. Guelph slipped to 14-15-2-3 and is just a point up on ninth place Saginaw in the Western Conference.

Majors General Manager/Coach James Boyd was delighted with his team's ability to come back all night.

"Our guys didn't quit at all, that was a really encouraging effort," Boyd said. "We showed lots of jam coming back the way we did and I really like the heart we showed with a short lineup.

"Some of our veterans came up big and that is really huge. It was one of the best games of the year for Mayer, and Partanen and Wise were great as well. It's a good way to kick off the second half."

Jason Dickinson scored twice for the Storm, while Zack Leslie and Scott Kosmachuk added singles.

Kosmachuk opened the scoring for the Storm with the lone goal of the opening period at 18:13, but Mayer answered back with his seventh goal of the year at 4:10 of the second period. Leslie's power play goal put Guelph in front again two minutes later, but Wise scored a shorthanded goal with less than one second left in the middle frame, leaving the score tied 2-2 after 40 minutes.

Dickinson's power play goal just 30 seconds into the third period put Guelph in front 3-2, but Wise again tied the game at 8:32. Dickinson tallied again at 12:47 to make it 4-3, but it was all Majors from there.

Foy tied the game just 16 seconds later and Mayer scored the game-winner with just 56 seconds left. Partanen added an empty net marker at 19:24 to complete the scoring.

"We showed some real character all night and I was pretty happy with our game," Boyd said. "Some guys really showed their compete level tonight."

Mississauga out-shot Guelph 42-30. JP Anderson made 26 saves in goal for the Majors while Brandon Foote stopped 36 shots for Guelph.

Guelph was 2-for-5 on the power play while the Majors failed to score in their five chances before 3,614 fans.

The Majors host the Niagara IceDogs Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Hershey Centre. Tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.ca or at the Hershey Centre box office during regular business hours.
