Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Niagara, ON- Dylan DeMelo scored the winner in the ninth round of the shootout to give the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors a 2-1 victory over the Niagara IceDogs tonight. The Majors improve to 4-0 against their rivals this season. The win also improves Mississauga to 24-3-0-1 on the season and 12 points ahead of Niagara for the lead in the division.
The IceDogs took the lead at 14:49 of the first period on the power play courtesy of David Pacan. Newly acquired IceDog Darren Archibald grabbed his own rebound and passed out-front to Pacan whose shot got through traffic and past Anthony Peters to make it 1-0. The Majors turned up the pressure but could not get anything past Niagara netminder Mark Visentin. The IceDogs took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Majors outplayed Niagara well into the second period and did not surrender a shot to the IceDogs until over 13 minutes into the second period. The IceDogs had power play opportunities in the period but the Majors penalty kill unit were the ones to score as Casey Cizikas capitalized on a mistake by Visentin to tie the game. Visentin went to play the puck behind his goal and Cizikas took it off of him and wrapped around and put the puck in uncontested to tie the game at 1-1 just under 12 minutes into the second period. Following the Majors goal, three fights broke out in a span of 33 seconds to set-up some late dramatics in the contest.
The third period and overtime provided nothing as the game remained deadlocked at 1-1 forcing a shootout. Niagara and Mississauga both missed their first attempts. Niagara's second shooter was Alex Friesen and he beat Peters with a backhander. Devante Smith-Pelly was stopped for Mississauga. Freddie Hamilton had a chance to win it for the 'Dogs but his shot missed the net. Casey Cizikas made no mistake and beat Visentin through the five hole to send it to a fourth round. Both teams failed on their fourth attempts but exchanged goals in the fifth round courtesy of Darren Archibald and Rob Flick. Each team failed in attempts six through eight and Dylan DeMelo beat Visentin over the shoulder to win it for Mississauga in round nine.
Anthony Peters made 26 saves and recorded his eighth win of the season for the Majors. Mark Visentin was busy in goal for Niagara stopping 42 of the 43 shots he faced to take the loss for the IceDogs. The Majors will now head home for two games this weekend. Tomorrow night the Oshawa Generals make their first trip to the Hershey Centre, puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Then on Sunday the Majors will host the Barrie Colts at 2:00 p.m. 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup ticket packages are on sale now.
