Majors Take 5-2 Win over Ottawa

December 4, 2011 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

For the first time since they started the season with seven straight wins, the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors are on a bit of a roll.

JP Anderson made 35 saves and Jamie Wise and Mika Partanen both had a goal and an assist as the Majors won their second straight game of the weekend, downing the Ottawa 67's 5-2 in Ontario Hockey League play Sunday afternoon at the Hershey Centre.

Riley Brace, Brett Foy and Stuart Percy scored the other goals for the Majors, who won back-to-back games for the first time since their early season winning streak. Ben Dubois and Cody Ceci replied for the 67's, who were playing their third game in as many days.

Dylan DeMelo and Justin Rasmussen both added two assists for the Majors, and DeMelo said getting wins over two quality teams like Kitchener and Ottawa on the weekend was huge for the club.

"We had a good weekend of practice and definitely carried that over into the games Friday and today," DeMelo said. "We came out of the gate pretty hard and that was the key today."

The Majors certainly did that, scoring three unanswered goals in the third period and making that stand up despite being out-shot 37-21.

"It was definitely a big win," DeMelo added. "We need to beat the teams ahead of us in the standings and to get four points this weekend is huge for us."

The Majors improved to 14-11-1-3 after the weekend sweep, and Mississauga General Manager/Coach James Boyd said his club really needed to pick up some weekend points given the tightness of the Eastern Conference standings.

"There are still so many teams tightly bunched that every point is a big one right now," Boyd said. "We played two quality teams this weekend and beat them both and allowed just four goals, so we have to be happy with that.

"They have the number three power play in the league and I thought we did a good job in shutting them down. We played a solid game overall and I thought Justin Rasmussen was especially good in both of the games this weekend."

Michael Nishi started the game in goal for Ottawa (17-8-3-1), but was pulled after the Majors fifth goal in the second period in favor of Petr Mrazek. Ottawa out-shot the Majors 14-6 in the second period and 15-4 in the third.

Wise opened the scoring for the Majors at 9:45 of the opening period and goals from Partanen and Brace shortly after gave Mississauga three goals in 3:09 and a 3-0 lead after the first period.

Brett Foy put the Majors up by four at 10:58 of the second period, but Dubois scored from a bad angle 26 seconds later to put Ottawa on the scoreboard.

Percy's fourth goal of the season on a power play at 14:57 chased Nishi and gave the Majors a 5-1 lead after 40 minutes. Ceci scored the lone goal of the third period five minutes in, but the 67's could get no closer.

The Majors are now off until Friday night when they host the Niagara IceDogs at 7:30 p.m. at the Hershey Centre. The Majors then host the Kitchener Rangers on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 2 p.m.

Tickets for all home games are available at www.ticketmaster.ca or at the Hershey Centre box office during regular business hours.
