Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Erie, PA The Mississauga St. Michael s Majors kicked off a tough weekend schedule tonight against the Erie Otters at Tullio Arena. The team traveled to Erie today and will be right back on the ice tomorrow night at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga to face Niagara. The Majors will be looking to bounce back tomorrow after a 3-2 loss to Erie tonight.
The double blue jumped out to an early lead in the first period getting on the board just 2:13 into the game when Devante Smith-Pelly scored his 23rd goal of the season, getting him within one of the team lead, to make it 1-0 for the Majors. Mississauga natives Chris DeSousa and Casey Cizikas had the assists. At 12:56, Derek Schoenmakers put home his 6th goal of the season to make it 2-0 Majors. Erie would cut the lead in half just before the end of the period when Brett Thompson scored his 27th of the season, assisted by Derek Holden and Mike Cazzola. Shots on goal were 13-12 in favour of Erie after the first period.
The Otters would pull even in the second period when Phil Varone scored at 6:57 to make it 2-2. Shawn Sydlowski and Brady Austin assisted on the Varone goal. The Majors did a much better job staying out of penalty trouble in the second period. After 4 minor penalties and a fighting major in the first period, the Majors only received 1 penalty in the second, when Dylan DeMelo took a fighting major at 15:32 after a scrap with Johnny McGuire. Although they couldn t solve Erie goaltender Ramis Sadikov, the Majors did outshoot Erie in the second period, 13-7.
The third period would not solve anything. Shots were 9 to 6 in favour of the Majors but neither team could break the tie. It was off to overtime for the second time in as many meetings between the two teams. It was a thrilling overtime period for the 2515 fans in attendance. Both teams had some great chances to score and JP Anderson had to make several stellar stops to send the game to a shootout.
Fans may have had a feeling of déjàvu as the two teams went to a shootout again tonight, after deciding their first meeting of the season the same way on Sunday, November 7 when the Otters won 2-1. That feeling got a little stronger after the shootout was over. Otters forward Shawn Sydlowski got the only goal in the shootout to give the Otters a 3-2 victory.
JP Anderson took the loss in net for Mississauga, making 28 on 30 shots. Ramis Sadikov got the win in net for Erie with 36 saves on 38 shots.
The Majors will now make the trip back to Mississauga to start a home and home series with the Niagara IceDogs tomorrow night. Game time is 7:30 PM.
