Majors' Offense Silent in OT Defeat
November 6, 2011 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
One point is better than none, especially when you don't score a goal as was the case with the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors on Sunday afternoon.
Adam Payerl scored the lone goal of the game at 1:34 of overtime and Malcolm Subban made 25 saves as the Belleville Bulls edged the Majors 1-0 in Ontario Hockey League play at the Hershey Centre, handing the Majors their third straight loss.
Payerl's backhand shot from behind the net somehow managed to slip past JP Anderson in the Mississauga goal to give the streaking Bulls their third straight win and seventh in their last 10 games. Mississauga (10-5-1-2) managed to keep their Central Division lead with the single point, remaining one point ahead of the Brampton Battalion.
Anderson made several huge saves for the Majors, who were out-shot 31-25, but couldn't handle Payerl's shot that hit him before trickling into the net for the lone goal of the game.
"I thought we played much better defensively and on five on five especially, we were much better than the last two games," Mississauga General Manager/Coach James Boyd said. "It was a pretty even game.
"A fluky bounce in overtime was the difference and not much you can do about that. Every point you can get is so important with the standings as tight as they are.
"It wasn't a great weekend but at the end of the season we may very well look back at the point we got today as having been very important."
The Majors played a solid first period, out-shooting the Bulls 10-5, but were out-shot by the Bulls 13-5 in the second period, with both Anderson and Subban coming up big when required.
The stalemate continued into the third period as well, with the Bulls out-shooting the Majors 11-10 and having several good scoring chances in the final two minutes of the period before overtime.
Belleville had the only two shots of the extra frame, with Jordan Subban and Brady Austin picking up assists on the game-winning goal. The Bulls failed to score in their four power play opportunities while the Majors had just one chance with the extra man all afternoon.
The Majors host the Barrie Colts at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Hershey Centre, with special Remembrance Day jerseys to be worn by the club for this game only. Tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.ca or at the Hershey Centre box office during regular business hours.
