Majors Lose Heartbreaker in Belleville

BELLEVILLE, ON (January 1, 2006) - The Toronto St. Michael's Majors had to swallow a difficult loss in Belleville this afternoon. Four unanswered Belleville goals within 3 minutes of play during the latter half of the 3rd period allowed the home squad to rally for a 7-6 win. The loss drops the Majors record to 17-15-3-3 on the season.

Steve Spade got the Majors on the board only 49 seconds into the affair, off of Cory Vitarelli and Justin Donati feeds. Then, the momentum shifts began. The first goal-scoring wave went to the Bulls as they counted three straight tallies at the end of the 1st period and beginning of the 2nd. The goalscorers were Andrew Self, Jeff Leavitt and Andrew Gibbons, with the assists getting credited to Ryan Berard (2), Cory Tanaka, John Hughes, Nick Pageau and Matt Kelly.

The Majors followed up with a run of their own, ringing off five consecutive goals during the end of the 2nd period and majority of the 3rd. The goals went to Tyler Donati (2), Matt Halischuk, Ryan Wilson and Justin Donati. The helpers were provided by J. Donati (2), Tyler Haskins (2), Scott Lehman (2), Wilson, Cassidy Preston and Jeff Larsh.

Unfortunately, the Bulls got the last laugh, responding with the aforementioned four straight goals between 14:57 and 17:54 of the final frame, to skate off with the 7-6 win. The Belleville goalscorers were Kelly (2), Pageau and Shawn Matthias. The assists were credited to Hughes (3), Tanaka (2), Berard, Pageau and Kyle Jukosky.

Wayne Savage made 27 saves in taking the loss for the Majors while Kevin Lalande had 38 stops for the Bulls. The Majors finished the day 3 for 6 on the power-play while the Bulls were 3 for 7. The game's three stars were Pageau (1st), Kelly (2nd) and J. Donati (3rd).

The Majors continue their stretch of road games that finds them in Owen Sound on Wednesday night (January 4th) at 7:00 pm and Oshawa next Sunday (January 8th) at 6:05 pm. They will return home to host the Ottawa 67's on Thursday, January 12th at 7:30 pm. All three contests will be broadcast on Rogers television in the Toronto region, channel 10 or 63, and webcast at www.stmichaelsmajors.com.
