
Whalers take 8-1 defeat in Windsor

WINDSOR - It was not a happy New Year's Day in Windsor for the Plymouth Whalers.
The Windsor Spitfires extended a 3-0 lead after one period of play with a single goal in the second period and four unanswered goals in the third to defeat the Whalers, 8-1, in an Ontario Hockey League game played before 2,559 at Windsor Arena.
In spite of the loss, Plymouth remains in first place in the OHL's West Division with a record of 19-13-1-3, good for 42 points and two points ahead of Saginaw (20-15-0-0).
Windsor got eight different goal scorers - Mitch Maunu (5th of the season), Paul McFarland (15) and Brad Snetsinger (penalty shot at 16th) in the first period, Cal O'Reilly (10th) in the second period and Ryan Garlock (14th), Peter Aston (6th), Chris Purves (1st OHL goal) and Kevin Hudes (3rd) in the third period. Windsor led 3-0 after one period and 4-1 after forty minutes.
Windsor won the game of special teams, going 4-for-8 on the power play and 4-for-5 when killing Plymouth power plays.
John Vigilante (Dearborn) scored Plymouth's only goal on a power play at 5:12 of the second period. The goal gives Vigilante 84 in his Plymouth career (11th on the team's all-time list) and 224 career points (9th on the all-time list), one point ahead of Stephen Weiss, now with the National Hockey League's Florida Panthers.
Windsor outshot Plymouth 38-30. Justin Peters started in goal for the Whalers and stopped 26 of 32 Windsor shots. Rookie Jeremy Smith (Brownstown) finished the game in relief, stopping 4 of 6 shots. Windsor's Anthony Guadagnolo stopped 29 of 30 Plymouth shots and earned the game's third star.
Plymouth starts a three-game road trip through Northern Ontario on Thursday when they play in Barrie (7:20 pm, www.plymouthwhalers.com). The Whalers continue on the road Friday in Sudbury (7:20 pm. www.plymouthwhalers.com)
and Saturday in Sault Ste. Marie (7:20 pm, www.plymouthwhalers.com). Plymouth's next home game is Wednesday, January 11 at 7:30 pm at the Compuware Sports Arena against Saginaw.
