Majors Fall to Battalion 2-1

November 3, 2011 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

JP Anderson did everything he could do to steal the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors a point on Thursday night, but his heroics weren't quite enough.

Seventeen shots won't often win you a hockey game, and that trend didn't change on Thursday night at the Powerade Centre as the Majors were out-shot 44-17 and barely out-scored on the scoreboard by the host Brampton Battalion.

Philip Lane scored twice and Matej Machovsky needed to make just 15 saves as the Battalion dropped the Majors 2-1 in front of 1,851 fans in one of four games played in the Ontario Hockey League.

Anderson gave up just two goals and turned in a tremendous effort, but was still dealt the loss despite making 42 saves, including 22 in the first period alone.

"If it wasn't for JP it could have been a lot worse tonight, that's for sure," Mississauga General Manager/Coach James Boyd said. "I thought they did a great job blocking up the neutral zone and frustrated us all night.

"We just weren't able to get anything going right from the get-go, and we've had a tough time in this rink so far this season. We need to regroup now for tomorrow night."

The Battalion outshot the Majors 23-4 in the first period, and 21-13 the rest of the way. The Battalion now lead the season series 2-0 after dealing the Majors their first loss of the season on October 10th by a score of 5-1.

It was the Majors who opened the scoring on a goal by Sergey Kuptsov, his eighth of the season just 2:14 into the first period, assisted by Eric Diodati and Justin Rasmussen.

Lane tied the game at 1-1 with his first of the night at the 6:58 mark from Patrik Machac and Brandon Robinson. He then put the Battalion ahead for good with just over two minutes left in the first period with an unassisted marker at 17:49.

The Majors had a prime opportunity to take a 2-1 lead themselves when early in the second period Riley Brace fed a wide open Jordan Mayer with no Machovsky in sight, but Mayer failed to get much on the shot, and it would be the Battalion who would eventually find the back of the net once more.

The Majors won't have to wait long to replace the memory of tonight's game with another, as the team hosts the Peterborough Petes on Friday night at the Hershey Centre at 7:30 p.m. They close out their weekend schedule of three games in four nights when the Belleville Bulls are the visitors on Sunday for a 2 p.m. start. Tickets for both games are still available online at www.ticketmaster.ca or at the Hershey Centre box office.
