Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Peterborough, ON- The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors increased their lead in the series over the Peterborough Petes with a 2-1 victory tonight at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. The Majors now lead the series 2-0.
The game lacked the same intensity as game one but the Majors managed to out play and out muscle the Petes for majority of the game and earned the victory. However, Mississauga will have little time to breathe as game three is scheduled for tomorrow night. St. Mike's set the tone early taking it to the Petes; however just over eight minutes in it was the Petes grabbing the opening marker after a mistake by the Majors. Netminder Chris Carrozzi came out of the net to play the puck behind the goal and fanned on it, as he went to get back into the goal, he lost his footing leaving the side of goal exposed. Jamie Wise grabbed the puck and tucked it past a diving Carrozzi to make it 1-0 for Peterborough. The teams continued to exchange momentum and the Majors knotted the game at 1-1 at 17:26 of the first thanks to Dustin Ekelman. Defenceman Blake Parlett rushed in and took the puck along the side board and drove to the net, his backhander was blocked but Ekelman jumped on the loose puck to put it past Jason Missiaen for his second of the playoffs to tie the game and head to the intermission.
The second period provided little to the story line. It wasn't until 19:54 of the period that a goal was scored and that put the Majors ahead, 2-1. The Majors went on their fourth power play of the game and converted their first power play goal of the playoffs. Stuart Percy fired a shot from the point at Missiaen. Missiaen thought he had closed his glove on the shot but the puck fell onto the stick of Devante Smith-Pelly, who was waiting in-front of the goal to bank it in and close the second period.
The Majors enforced their shutdown style in the third period leaving the Petes almost no opportunities to score. Peterborough found themselves on a five-on-three advantage in the early minutes of the third but were unable to score. Carrozzi robbed Matt Puempel with a big glove save during the advantage. Mississauga continued to force Peterborough into committing errors all over the ice as the period rolled along. The Petes pulled their goaling in the closing seconds of the game but were unable to score, making the final 2-1 for Mississauga. Chris Carrozzi made 18 saves and improves to 2-0 in the playoffs for the Majors. Jason Missiaen takes the loss after making 36 saves for the Petes.
The third game of the series is set for tomorrow night at the Hershey Centre where the Majors will try to take a commanding lead. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. and tickets are available through the Hershey Centre Box Office or by calling the Majors office at (905) 502-7788 x.1.
Notes: Ryan Spooner made his return to the Peterborough line-up after missing 21 games due to a broken collarbone, he suffered on January 23. The Majors finished the game 1/6 on the power play, while successfully killing off all four power plays for Peterborough. Devante Smith-Pelly, Dustin Ekelman and Austin Watson were the "Three Stars" of the game.
