Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Spenser Cobbold might have said it best;
When a goalie's hot, he's hot.
That little bit of philosophical hockey insight proved to be true as the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors picked up their third consecutive win - their second of the weekend - when they dropped the Barrie Colts 2-1 at the Barrie Molson Centre in Ontario Hockey League play on Saturday night.
Trevor Carrick and Jamie Wise scored for the Majors (27-25-1-6) who retained sole possesion of sixth place in the Eastern Conference. Brandon Maxwell was once again sturdy in goal for the Majors, making 38 saves to secure his team's victory.
Majors General Manager/Head Coach James Boyd didn't hesitate to give credit to his goaltender, who has been a major reason the team has remained a threat in the Eastern Conference.
"Maxwell slammed the door for us when he really needed to and that was huge. We played a solid game and winning on the road against an east opponent is huge. Once again, lots of positives and we're battling hard."
Every night seems to be a battle for the Majors, but they've certainly done their part through the first two games of their three game weekend. They remain in the sixth spot in the Eastern Conference with 61 points, followed by the Oshawa Generals who defeated Saginaw in a shootout with 60 points, and the Belleville Bulls who occupy the 8th and final spot with 59 points after a huge 3-2 upset victory over the London Knights. The Peterborough Petes were idle on Saturday night and now sit in ninth spot with 57 points.
Mark Scheifele opened the scoring with his 20th goal of the season on a penalty shot at 12:16 to give the Colts a 1-0 lead.
Carrick scored his second goal in as many games and third of the season just 1:16 into the second frame from Sergey Kuptsov and Kristoff Kontos to even the score at 1-1. Wise scored what would prove to be the game winner on the power play, from Riley Brace and Mika Partanen at 12:06 to give the Majors a 2-1 edge.
Shots were 14-7 in favour of Mississauga during the opening 20 minutes, and 14-13 in favour of Barrie in the middle frame, leading to a 27-21 Mississauga edge after two periods. The Colts outshot the Majors 18-2 in the final frame but failed to capitalize, as the final shots were 39-29 in favour of the Colts.
Mathias Niederberger was handed the loss, allowing two goals on 29 shots.
The Majors were 1-for-6 on the powerplay, while the Colts were unsucessful on their five opportunities with the man advantage.
The Majors finish off their three-in-three against the Erie Otters on Sunday, February 26th at 2 p.m. Tickets are available by visiting www.ticketmaster.ca or throught the Hershey Centre box office prior to the game.
