Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Mississauga, ON- Justin Shugg scored two goals including the game winner to lead the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors past the Barrie Colts 7-4 tonight at the Hershey Centre. The win improves the Majors to 21-2-0-1 on the season.
While the Majors managed to score seven goals in the game the total could have been higher as five different Majors hit the post on five separate occasions. The Colts power play unit kept them in the game as well as goaltender Peter Di Salvo, who faced 47 shots in the game. Justin Shugg continued his solid start to the season scoring twice while Captain Casey Cizikas had a three point night. The Majors opened the scoring at 13:52 of the first period when Jamie Wise scored his first goal of the season and first as a Major after the Colts turned the puck over in their zone. Corey Bureau took the puck as passed out front to Wise who was all alone to beat Di Salvo to make it 1-0. The Majors increased the lead in the closing seconds of the period courtesy of Devante Smith-Pelly. Smith-Pelly was the recipient of a Casey Cizikas pass. Cizikas carried the puck into the Colts zone and sent a cross ice pass to Smith-Pelly who was waiting on the door step to make it 2-0 after twenty minutes of play.
The Colts pulled to within one just 53 seconds into the second period after the Majors turned over the puck at centre ice. Taylor Carnevale found Colin Behenna to make it 2-1. The Colts tied the game up at 2:24 with their first of three power play goals on the night. JP Anderson saved the first shot but Darren Archibald knocked in the rebound to make it 2-2. The game remained tied until 15:16 of the period when Justin Shugg put the Majors ahead 3-2. Shugg drove to the Colts net and beat Di Salvo with a backhander for his fifteenth goal of the year. Joseph Cramarossa restored the Majors two goal lead at 19:32 after his wrist shot from the faceoff circle beat Di Salvo to make it 4-2 for Mississauga. The Majors took the two goal lead into the second intermission.
31 seconds into the third period the Majors made it 5-2 when Gregg Sutch beat Di Salvo. Marc Cantin made a great play to keep the puck in and passed to Cramarossa in-front of the Colts goal. Cramarossa had his back to Di Salvo and was screening the Colts' netminder. Cramarossa fed Sutch with a pass and Sutch fired past a screened Di Salvo for the goal. The Colts cut the Majors lead again when Mark Scheifele tipped in Colin Behenna's shot from the point to make it 5-3. Justin Shugg scored his second goal of the game just under three minutes later on the power play with a low wrist shot that hit off the post and went in to make it 6-3 for the Majors. Darren Archibald scored his second goal of the game at 8:43 on the power play off a rebound to cut the Majors lead again. That's as close as they would come as the Majors added another goal at 10:18 on the power play to restore the three goal advantage. Casey Cizikas shot hit high off the glass and bounced off and hit the glove of Mitchell Bursey and into the Colts net. Cizikas was credited with the goal for Mississauga. JP Anderson made 24 saves to get the win for the Majors. Peter Di Salvo stopped 40 of the 47 shots he faced in a losing effort. The Majors will be back in action on Sunday when they host the Owen Sound Attack at 2:00 p.m. 2011 MasterCard Memorial ticket packages are on sale to purchase yours call the Majors office at (905) 502-7788 x.1.
