
Brandon Saad Nets Three Goals in 4-3 OT Loss to Petes

The Saginaw Spirit suffered a 4-3 loss in overtime to the Peterborough Petes Friday night at The Dow Event Center, despite outshooting their opponent 39 shots to 32 and Spirit forward Brandon Saad netting his second hat trick of the season. The Spirit did garner one point despite the loss, moving their point total to 38 with a record of 17-5-3-1. The Spirit wrap up their weekend series with a 7:11 PM game against the Windsor Spitfires Saturday night at The Dow.
The Petes opened scoring at 18:37 in the first courtesy a power play opportunity, with center Austin Watson scoring from defenseman Kalle Ekelund and center Alan Quine. The Spirit answered back in the second period with winger Brandon Saad scoring his seventeenth of the season with a short handed goal at the 15:12 mark with assists from defensemen Ryan O'Connor and Joe Underwood. The game stood tied after two periods of play.
The scoring heated up in the third period, starting with Saad scoring his second of the night from winger Jordan Szwarz and defenseman Matt Ashman at the 3:59 mark. Peterborough quickly responded however, moving the score to 2-2 with a goal from center Justin Larson at the 4:32 mark from winger Zach Tatrn and Quine. Saad notched his third of the night for his second hat trick of the season at 6:54 in the third, moving the score to 3-2 Saginaw. Defensemen Peter Hermenegildo and Ashman assisted on the goal. The Petes would manage to tie up the game and force overtime at 9:20 in the third, after defenseman Slater Koekkoek tallied his fourth of the season from winger Lino Martschini and Watson.
The Peters were able to clinch the win and the two points in overtime, after a power play situation provided them the game winning goal. Quine tallied his first goal of the night, his third point of the game, a 1:51 into the extra frame from Watson and winger Matt Puempel.
Rookie Spirit netminder Jake Paterson tallied 28 saves on 32 shots, while Petes goalie Andrew D'Agostini tallied 36 saves on 39 shots.
