Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors participated in their final home game of the regular season against the Niagara IceDogs. The Majors battled hard throughout the evening, and outshot the visitors in the middle stanza. Unfortunately, they were forced to settle for a 5-2 loss at home and, as a result, their record shifts to 30-32-2-2 on the year.

Meanwhile, as the Barrie Colts and the Ottawa 67's were defeated in both of their encounters this evening, the Majors will indeed be facing off with Niagara as their first round opponent in the playoffs.

In the 1st period, Niagara's Luca Caputi wired a shot into the net at 6:35, with support from Michael Swift and Andrew Merrett, to open up the frame. Merrett, Mathew Maione and Barry Sanderson rounded out the scoring, as they each connected to put the visitors up 4-0. The assists went to Swift, Stephen Legein, Josh Day and Andrew Foreman.

Then, Niagara was up 5-0 in the 2nd period when Jason Bergeron found the back of the net at 7:14, with the lone assist going to Caputi. However, the Majors got on the board, as Jesse Messier connected at 12:19 (power-play), with support from Tim Billingsley and Mike Pelech.

Mississauga's Kaspars Daugavins tallied the final goal of the night at 2:13 of the 3rd period, on an unassisted effort, to complete the affair.

Anthony Grieco got the start in net for Mississauga and made 32 saves while Lucas Lobsinger turned aside 28 shots for Niagara. The Majors power-play was 1 for 6 while the IceDogs went 0 for 9. The game's three stars were Caputi (1st), Daugavins (2nd) and Lobsinger (3rd).

Mississauga will visit the Barrie Colts tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. Then, they complete the regular season with a contest against the Oshawa Generals this Sunday evening at 6:05 p.m. All road games will be available by webcast on the Majors web site (www.stmichaelsmajors.com).
