The Lakeland Magic, NBA G League affiliate of the Orlando Magic, defeat the Mexico City Capitanes 99-89 at the RP Funding Center.
The Magic faced the Captines in the first night of a two-game home stand. In the first quarter, neither opponent gained much momentum. The former number 3 pick Jahlil Okafor had a strong first quarter dominating the paint. At the start of the second quarter Magic guard Jay Scrubb immediately knocked down a three-point shot. Scrubb was the only Magic player to make multiple field goals ending the first half in double digits. Mexico City led the game 43-40.
The Magic opened the second half by taking a seven-point lead. Lakeland kept building on their lead going on an 11-0 run. At the end of the third Drake Jefferies sank a three-point shot and gave the Magic a 13-point lead. Magic point guard Zavier Simpson took over in the second half scoring 13 points and gaining the team their first victory after three straight losses. "We needed to keep playing defense, we held them to a 43-point first half. It was important to get this win after a 1-3 road trip," Simpson said.
Jay Scrubb finished with a game-high 30 points and five rebounds. Zavier Simpson posted 16 points. Simi Shittu added a double-double scoring 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Jahlil Okafor had 21 points and nine rebounds for the Capitanes.
The Lakeland Magic (4-5) will host the Mexico City Capitanes on Saturday, November 26 at the RP Funding Center at 7:00 PM on Bally Sports Florida.
