Chicago Express News Release
Kalamazoo, MI - The Chicago Express, proud member of the ECHL and proud affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, dropped a 1-0 lead after the first to fall by the final 5-2 score to the Kalamazoo Wings at Wings Stadium on Friday night.
A Kalamazoo power play midway through the first period proved fortuitous for the Express, as F Mike Embach opened up the scoring with a shorthanded goal. C Aaron Marvin knocked the puck out of the defensive zone, and Embach snapped a shot past G Maxime Clermont 10:13 into the frame to put Chicago ahead 1-0. The Express held the lead into the first intermission despite being outshot 16-9 by Kalamazoo in the first. The Wings found their offense in the second period, thanks in large part to the power play. A scramble in front of the net saw the loose puck end up on the stick of D Mike Matczak, and he fired it home to even the score at 1-1 at 5:50. Less than three minutes later, F Dwight Helminen put the Wings head with their second power play goal. Another broken play increased Kalamazoo's lead to 3-1, as C Kory Karlander found a way to slide a pass through to F Eric Kattelus, who slapped the puck into the top corner of the net just one second after their power play expired. The Wings held a 3-1 lead after two, along with a 34-21 shots on goal advantage. RW Danick Paquette put Chicago right back into the contest 5:08 into the third. A shot from D Scott Wietecha skipped wide of the net, and Paquette banked a shot of Clermont and into the net to make the score 3-2. It was as close as Chicago would get, as Helminen knocked home his second goal of the night on a 2-on-0 breakaway, and F Steven Anthony finished off the scoring by slamming home a rebound on a shot from Darren Archibald with 6:16 left in the game as Kalamazoo won 5-2.
Chicago hits the road again tomorrow as they battle the Kalamazoo Wings at Wings Stadium for the second straight game. Chicago then returns home to take on the Wheeling Nailers once again on Wednesday, March 14. The homestand continues against Toledo on Friday, March 16, and against the Trenton Titans on Saturday, March 17, and Sunday, March 18. Friday night is a Dollar Friday at the Sears Centre Arena, on Saturday the Express will wear special St. Patrick's Day jerseys, while Sunday features a skate with the team following the game.
