Calgary Vipers News Release
The Calgary Vipers have signed pitcher Mac Suzuki to a 2010 Golden Baseball League contract. The former Major Leaguer returns to the Vipers for a third consecutive season after securing the 2009 G.B.L. Championship by recording the final out. Last year the right-handed thrower had a terrific season in Calgary with a 2.01 earned run average, 12 saves, and a staggering 76 strikeouts to 13 walks in 49.1 innings. Earlier this year the 6'4" 220 pounder won the Mexican "AAA" league E.R.A. title with a 2.89 in 20 starts and 131 innings playing for Chihuahua.
The 35-year-old appeared in 117 Major League Baseball games playing with the Kansas City Royals, Seattle Mariners, Colorado Rockies, and Milwaukee Brewers. He was the first Japanese born player to pitch in the American League, first to pitch in the big leagues without throwing prior in the Japanese pro leagues, and only third player from Japan to play in the MLB. The Scottsdale, Arizona resident is currently playing in his 18th professional season.
To make room on the roster the Vipers have placed pitcher Joe Sergent on irrevocable waivers.
