Tucson Toros News Release

Victoria, CAN - The Tucson Toros began their two week excursion into Canada with a 3-1 victory over the Victoria Seals Thursday night. Tucson gained a half game on the idle Orange County Flyers with the win, and now sit just 3.5 games out of the division lead.

Starter Albie Lopez threw his best game of the season by out-dueling Victory ace Isaac Hess. Lopez allowed just 1 run on 5 hits in 7 innings of work to become the first Toro to reach 5 wins this year. Lopez' strong game continued his recent hot streak in which he has posted a 1.45 ERA since July 1st to lower his season ERA to 3.63. Hess proved to be a worthy adversary by striking out 11 in 7 innings of his own, but Toros got to the righthander for a run both the 2nd and 6th innings to hand him his 2nd loss of the year.

After giving up a run in the first, Lopez helped even the score with a 2-out RBI single in the 2nd to bring in 1B Cristobal Santana. SS Ryan Priddy put Tucson on top with a solo shot in the 6th, giving him a team leading 7 bombs this year. C Luis Apodaca led off the 9th with a base hit and took advantage of a couple of Victoria errors before scoring an insurance run for Tucson on a wild pitch.

Priddy and Santana both finished with a pair of hits, with Santana's extending his hitting streak to 16 games. Cristobal also raised his batting average to .374, good for 4th in the GBL.

The Toros will take on the Seals in Victory once again on Saturday for game two of the three game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Tucson time.
