Victoria, BC - Returning to Royal Athletic Park to open up their longest homestand of the season, the Victoria Seals kicked off a four-game series against the Tucson Toros on Thursday night. Turning to Isaac Hess (3-1) on the mound, the Seals squared off against Albie Lopez (4-3) in game one.

After Hess struck out the side in the top of the first, the Seals grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the frame. Wilver Perez led off the inning with a base hit to shallow left field before Tim Rodriguez opened the scoring with an RBI double.

The Toros would respond to tie the game in the top of the second, however, when their starter Lopez helped his own cause with a run-scoring single to even the game at 1-1 through two innings.

A host of tremendous defense, including six combined double plays and a franchise-record tying 11 strikeouts from Hess, then carried the game deadlocked into the top of the sixth. That's when lead-off batter Ryan Priddy gave Tucson the lead for good, picking up a solo home run to put the Toros on top 2-1.

The visitors then found a key insurance run in the top of the ninth when two errors on the same play from Perez and Rodriguez opened the door for Luis Apodaca to cross home plate and lift the Toros to a 3-1 advantage.

Unable to muster a comeback against Tucson closer Emiliano Fruto, the Seals dropped the series opener against the Toros by a 3-1 final score.

Albie Lopez earned his fifth win of the season for the Toros while Hess took the loss despite seven strong innings on the mound for Victoria. Ryan Priddy's solo home run proved to be the difference in a well-played game while Tim Rodriguez had the lone RBI for the Seals.

Game two of this series is set for 7:05 p.m. (PT) tomorrow night at Royal Athletic Park, with Wilver Perez still within reach of the Golden Baseball League single-season stolen base record. Tickets are available by calling (250) 220-7777, or online via www.victoriaseals.ca. The contest will also be broadcast online on the Victoria Seals Broadcast Network via the 'Watch Live' link at www.victoriaseals.ca.
