Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS - The Mississippi Braves clinched their first series win of the season on Sunday afternoon in a 7-3 victory over the Biloxi Shuckers at Trustmark Park. The M-Braves jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, and Drake Baldwin went 3-for-4 with a double, home run, and four RBI in the win.
The first five batters reached for Mississippi (16-23) against Biloxi starter TJ Shook (L, 2-5) in the bottom of the first inning. Justin Dean led off the inning with a ground-rule double to center field, and Nacho Alvarez Jr. followed with one of his two walks on the day. Baldwin stepped to the plate and belted a three-run home run off the Farm Bureau Grill sign in right field. The 391-foot shot put the M-Braves up 3-0. Yolbert Sanchez kept the first-inning hit parade going with a single, and Geraldo Quintero walked to place two on base. Cal Conley hit a one-out single to bring home Sanchez to make it 4-0. Shook exited the game after just 2/3 of an inning and four runs allowed. The Braves got the fifth run when catcher Andy Yerzy threw a ball wildly back to the mound, and Quintero came home.
M-Braves starter Drew Parrish fell one out shy of qualifying for a win on Sunday. The 26-year-old left-hander kept Biloxi off the board in the first three innings. Noah Campbell made it 4-1 with an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning. The Shuckers stranded 12 on base Sunday, with six of them in the first four innings. Parrish exited in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and two outs. Rolddy Munoz (W, 1-0) entered the game and issued back-to-back bases-loaded walks, trimming the Mississippi lead to 5-3. Parrish's final line in his eighth start was three runs allowed (one earned) on eight hits with no walks and five strikeouts over 4.2 innings pitched.
Munoz settled down and ended up with three strikeouts over 1.1 innings, enough to pick up his first Double-A win. Domingo Gonzalez, Hayden Harris, and Parker Dunshee delivered scoreless innings to finish the game. Harris lowered his ERa to 0.66 over his first 12 outings of 2024, logging two more strikeouts. The M-Braves pitching staff struck out 13 and walked only two on Sunday.
The M-Braves tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Baldwin and Sanchez hit back-to-back RBI doubles to push the lead to 7-3.
Sanchez was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI, while Dean was 2-for-5. The top four batters in the M-Braves lineup - Dean, Alvarez, Baldwin, and Sanchez combined for seven hits and six runs scored.
