Mississippi Braves News Release

The top two pitching staffs in the Southern League were on display for the second night in a row as Mississippi and Birmingham had an old fashioned pitcher's duel before a crowd of 2,482 at Trustmark Park Monday night.

Francisley Bueno, 0-1 with an ERA of 11.57 coming into the game, and Jack Egbert, 2-0 and allowing 1 ½ earned runs a contest, battled it out through the first six innings. Bueno shutdown the Barons through 5.2 innings, before giving way to the Braves bullpen, while Egbert was still going strong through six innings. Charlie Morton spelled Bueno and threw an inning-and-a third scoreless.

Egbert was nearly unhittable through 6.1 innings - at one point surrendering 17 consecutive Braves batters. With one out in the seventh, Egbert walked Brandon Jones setting the stage for the Southern League's top hitter and the Braves' top prospect, Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Salty ripped a double down the right field line that scored Jones all the way from first to give Mississippi the first lead of the game.

First baseman Mark Jurich stepped to the plate next and slapped a double down the left field line bringing Saltalamacchia to the plate and extending the Braves lead to 2-0.

After the M-Braves took the lead in the seventh, Joe Winkelsas went to work in the eighth. He induced a 6-3 groundout and fanned two batters in a scoreless inning to extend his scoreless innings pitched streak to 16.1. Joey Devine came on in the ninth and, after allowing a runner on an error, K'd one and induced a game-ending double play to record his third save of the year and his second in as many nights.

The Braves and Barons play game four of this five-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Trustmark Park. The Braves will send lefty Dan Smith to the hill while Birmingham will counter with lefty Wes Whisler.
