Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
Jackson, Tenn. - Jacksonville Suns designated hitter John Lindsey smashed a two-out, three-run homerun in the top of the tenth inning to break a 2-2 deadlock and send Jacksonville to a 5-2, 10-inning Monday victory over the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx.
With the win the Suns improved to 10-8 overall and 5-3 on the current 10-game road trip. The Diamond Jaxx fell to 7-11 in the loss.
Jacksonville opened the scoring in the second inning when 3B Marshall McDougall connected on his third homerun of the season, a two-run shot to right field to make it a 2-0 game.
Suns starting pitcher Eric Cyr pitched well in the early stages to preserve the lead, but West Tenn finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning. Diamond Jaxx 2B Luis Valbuena hit his third homerun of the season, a fifth-inning, two-run blast to right field that tied the game 2-2.
That 2-2 score held as both pitching staffs settled in. West Tenn could only get three baserunners from the sixth inning through the ninth, while the Suns only had two baserunners from the seventh through ninth frames.
As the game headed to extra innings, Diamond Jaxx reliever Aaron Trolia began work in his fifth different relief inning. Juan Gonzalez led off the inning with a bunt single, but was forced out when Chin-Lung Hu grounded into a force play for the first out. Wilkin Ruan next bounced out to the second baseman, allowing Hu to advance to second base with two out. Trolia then intentionally walked Xavier Paul to get to the Southern League's leading homerun hitter John Lindsey. The Hattiesburg, Miss. made Trolia and West Tenn pay as he blasted his sixth homerun of the season over the left-center wall, a three-run shot that gave the Suns a 5-2 lead.
Of Lindsey's 10 hits in 2007, six of them are homeruns. The homerun was his second extra-inning blast of the current road trip, as he hit a 14th inning homerun in game one at Huntsville to break another 2-2 tie.
Jon Meloan (3-1) came back to the mound in the last of the tenth and sealed the game to pick up a victory. Aaron Trolia (1-1) fell in the loss.
The Suns and Diamond Jaxx will meet for game four of the series Tuesday at 8:05 p.m. ET. Suns RH Alvis Ojeda will face Diamond Jaxx RH Doug Fister. Fans can follow the action in Jacksonville beginning at 7:50 p.m. on AM 930 The Fox or online at jaxsuns.com.
