Mississippi Braves News Release
Hoover, AL - In his second career double-A start, Andre Rienzo shut down the Mississippi Braves over eight innings in a Birmingham Barons 3-0 win on Friday night at Regions Park.
Rienzo, just off a 50-game suspension, struck out seven and held the Braves(1-1, 31-41) to four singles in his eight innings. Meanwhile, the Barons (1-1, 31-40) scored just enough off of Braves starter Gary Moran.
Mississippi and Birmingham took a scoreless game into the bottom of the fifth inning. Jim Gallagher hit a lead-off single, and two batters later Erik Morrison doubled to put men on second and third. Catcher Damaso Espino singled to score Gallagher and the Barons took a 1-0 lead.
Two more runs came in the seventh. Seth Loman and Morrison singled, and Espino grounded into an error at second base to score a run. Two batters later, Jared Mitchell drove in his fourth run in two days with a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Morrison from third giving the Barons a 3-0 lead.
Moran allowed three runs, two earned, on nine hits in seven innings. It was his sixth loss of the season. Rienzo earned his first double-A win, and Ryan Kussmaul earned his seventh save.
For Moran, it was the third time this season where he's gone at least seven innings and suffered a loss.
The Barons snapped a three-game win streak for Mississippi. The loss also snapped a 16-game hit streak for Todd Cunningham and an 11-game hit streak for Keenan Wiley, who both went 0-for-4. Cunningham had one last chance with two outs in the ninth inning, but he flew out to left field to end the game.
The M-Braves try to bounce back on Saturday evening, taking on the Barons in game three of a five-game series beginning at 6:30 PM at Regions Park. RHP Zeke Spruill (5-6, 3.54) makes his first start since the All-Star break, taking on left-hander Spencer Arroyo (0-0, 0.00) in his double-A debut. Listen live beginning at 6:00 PM CT with the Vicksburg Toyota "Countdown to First Pitch" on 103.9 WYAB and online at MississippiBraves.com.
