Huntsville Stars News Release
JACKSON, Tenn. - A ninth inning, solo-home run by Kentrail Davis was the difference as the Huntsville Stars began the second half of the Southern League season on a positive note with a 4-3 victory over the Jackson Generals at Pringles Park Thursday evening.
The Stars came out of the gates hot to begin their second half by roughing up Generals starter Steve Garrison. In the first inning, shortstop Tommy Manzella singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A RBI single by first baseman Hunter Morris put Huntsville on the board. In the next at-bat, a towering two-run home run by left fielder Scott Krieger gave the Stars a 3-0 lead.
However, Jackson chipped away at Huntsville's lead throughout the game.
In the third inning, Generals' first baseman Eric Campbell was hit by a pitch from Huntsville starter Josh Stinson to begin the inning. Third baseman Leury Bonilla knocked a RBI single to trim the Stars lead to two. In the fifth inning, a two-out RBI single by second baseman Stefan Romero off of Stinson scored Campbell to cut the Stars lead to 3-2. In the seventh inning, a RBI groundout by Bonilla off of Stars reliever Brandon Kintzler tied the game up at three apiece.
The score remained that way until the ninth inning, where Davis crushed a fastball from Generals RHP Jonathan Arias over the right field wall gave the Stars what would end up being their game-winning run. For Davis, the homerun was his first of the season.
On the pitching side, Stars LHP Mitch Stetter earned his first win of the season after pitching 0.2 innings and getting out of the eighth inning without a run. Southern League All-Star RHP Jesus Sanchez notched his eighth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning. Stinson, in a no-decision, pitched six innings while giving up just two runs on five hits.
Game two of a five-game series will begin on Friday as the Stars will send All-Star RHP Evan Anundsen (4-3, 3.30 ERA) to the mound to square off against RHP Forest Snow (0-1, 1.59 ERA). First pitch is at 7:05 PM.
