Mississippi Braves News Release
Birmingham, AL - The Mississippi Braves jumped on the Birmingham Barons for 13 hits on Sunday afternoon in a 5-1 win over the Birmingham Barons in the five-game series finale at Regions Field.
Mitch Atkins (5-0) threw his first nine-inning complete game since April 2012 with the Washington Nationals organization, holding Birmingham to just five hits and a run while striking out six. It was the second nine-inning complete game of the season for the Braves, joining Greg Ross's shutout of Huntsville on June 30.
The Braves (16-14; 55-44) broke through in the first inning off Barons starter Myles Jaye (1-9). Jose Peraza led off the ballgame with a single, stole second and scored on a Kyle Wren double down the right field line.
In the third Mississippi tacked on three more. Braeden Schlehuber clubbed a single for the first of three hits on the day. Peraza drove him home with his second triple of the season to make it 2-0, then Wren followed up with his second double of the game for a 3-0 lead. Two batters later, Rich Poythress singled to left to score another, giving Mississippi an early 4-0 lead.
Atkins continued to cruise, at one point retiring 11 straight batters and 15 of 16. The Barons (15-13; 44-54) got their only run when Rangel Ravelo cracked his seventh home run of the season, a solo shot to start the seventh inning.
Mississippi got the run right back in the eighth. David Rohm led off with a triple and Kyle Kubitza singled him home to make it 5-1 Braves.
Jaye took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits over six frames with four strikeouts and two walks. Brandon Hardin and Cody Winiarski combined to pitch the final three frames in relief for Birmingham, allowing a run on five hits.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Braves, who now continue a ten-game road trip with a five game series with the Tennessee Smokies. The series opens on Monday night at Smokies Park at 6:15 PM CT, with Jason Hursh (7-6, 3.90) scheduled to get the start. Tennessee has not announced a starting pitcher.
