Smokies Salvage Finale in Huntsville

Huntsville, AL-Addison Russell hit a pair of homeruns including a grand slam leading the Tennessee Smokies to a 10-3 win over the Huntsville Stars Sunday afternoon at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville.

The Smokies took an early 2-0 lead against Brent Suter. Russell hit a first inning two-run homerun to left center.

The Stars chipped away at the deficit. In the bottom of the second, Kentrail Davis produced a sacrifice fly scoring Joey Paciorek making it 2-1.

The Stars had the bases loaded with nobody out in the bottom of the third inning. They were only able to score once when Shea Vucinich hit into a double play tying the game at 2-2.

The game changer for the Smokies came in the top of the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Russell launched a grand slam to deep left off Suter making it 6-2.

The Stars scored their final run of the day in the bottom of the fifth. Josh Prince grounded out to the shortstop Russell scoring Rivera cutting the Smokies lead to 6-3.

Tennessee put the game away in the top of the seventh. Christian Villanueva hit a two-run homer to dead center against RHP Manny Barreda increasing the Smokies lead to 8-3.

The Smokies scored their last runs in the top of the ninth off RHP Tanner Poppe. With two outs, Johnathan Mota hit a two-run double over right fielder Josh Prince's head scoring Jorge Soler and Dustin Geiger giving Tennessee a 10-3.

Suter(9-7), who took the loss worked 4.2 innings and allowed eight hits on six runs, including two homeruns.

The Stars(15-15, 61-39) will travel to Jackson, Tennessee Monday to begin a five-game series against the Jackson Generals, the Double-A Affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. Monday night's game can be heard with Steve Jarnicki starting at 6:50 pm CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.
