Mississippi Braves News Release
Birmingham, AL - Daniel Castro hit two home runs and the Mississippi Braves came from behind for an 8-4 win over the Birmingham Barons on Wednesday night at Regions Field.
Trailing 4-2 entering the 7th, The Braves (15-11; 54-41) teed off on two Birmingham relievers. Braulio Ortiz (0-1) started the inning, allowing a leadoff walk to Mycal Jones, who moved to second on a groundout and scored on a Jose Peraza single to pull to 4-3.
Peraza swiped second and moved to third on a passed ball, and Kyle Wren walked to put men at the corners. Wren stole second and David Rohm drove in both with a single for a 5-4 lead.
That ended Ortiz's day, but the Braves kept swinging the bats against Jarrett Casey. Rich Poythress got a single and Rohm moved to third for a Kyle Kubitza sac fly and a 6-4 lead. Then Castro clubbed his second home run of the day and third of the year to grow the lead to 8-4.
Jason Hursh (7-6) earned the win, throwing 6 1/3 innings and allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits over 6 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked two in the winning effort. John Cornely picked up his second save, throwing the final 2 2/3 innings scoreless with just a hit and two strikeouts.
Birmingham (12-12; 41-53) built up an early lead in the first few innings. Back-to-back singles in the first put Jared Mitchell and Trayce Thompson aboard, and Dan Black grounded out to first unassisted for an RBI and an early lead.
Castro tied the game 1-1 with a solo shot off starter Scott Snodgress in the top of the second, his second of the year for Mississippi.
Birmingham broke the tie with three runs in the third. Mitchell walked with one away and Black was hit by a pitch with two outs. Rangel Ravelo and Kevan Smith hit back-to-back RBI singles and Chris Curley grounded into an error at short, scoring another run to make it 4-1 Birmingham.
Mississippi cut the deficit with a run in the fourth. Poythress drew a leadoff walk and Kyle Kubitza followed with another. Barrett Kleinknecht ripped a single to load the bases and Mycal Jones drove in Poythress with another single for a 4-2 deficit.
Snodgress allowed two earned runs on six hits over six innings, striking out five and walking four in the no-decision. Ortiz suffered the loss, allowing four runs on two hits and two walks over 1/3 of an inning.
The Braves and Barons square off in the second of a five-game set on Thursday night at 7:05 PM CT at Regions Field. Right-hander Greg Ross (3-1, 0.98) takes the hill for the Braves against Barons right-hander Mike Recchia (5-2, 3.02).
