Mississippi Braves News Release
BIRMINGHAM, AL - Birmingham's Evan Skoug sent a fly ball to Andrew Moritz in left field in the bottom of the 11th inning, sending Yoelqui Cespedes sprinting to the plate to try to score the tying run. Moritz threw a strike to catcher Logan Brown, who applied the tag to Cespedes, sealing a 6-5 victory over Birmingham on Friday night in 11 innings.
The M-Braves (26-22, 55-62) won their third straight over the Barons (21-28, 52-66) at Regions Field and have won six of eight. Starter Alan Rangel gave the Braves another quality start on Friday night, striking out nine, walking none, and surrendering four runs (three earned) on seven hits. His solid outing kept the Braves in the game and allowed for another late-inning comeback.
The Barons got out to a 2-0 lead on the first three pitches of the game after back-to-back doubles from Duke Ellis and Colson Montgomery, then an RBI single by Oscar Colas.
Justyn-Henry Malloy continued his torrid pace at the plate with a pair of doubles on Friday night. His first came in the third inning, setting up a two-run single by Jalen Miller to tie the game at 2-2.
The Barons bounced right back with single runs in the third and fourth to take a 4-2 lead.
Mississippi took advantage of a dropped fly ball from Birmingham left-fielder Ellis in the seventh inning, and Jordan Cowan eventually scored on a wild pitch. In the eighth inning, Malloy led off with another double and came home on another Miller RBI single.
Lisandro Santos (W, 2-0) was terrific out of the M-braves bullpen, throwing up a zero in the bottom of the ninth inning. Malloy scored bonus runner Cody Milligan with a sacrifice fly to center to give the Braves their first lead at 5-4. Down to their final out and strike in the bottom of the 10th, Luis Mieses doubled home the tying run to send the game to the 11th.
The Braves took advantage of Edgar Navaarro's command issues and got a two-out bases-loaded walk from Logan Brown to take a 6-5 lead. Tyler Osik singled to begin the bottom of the 11th inning, sending bonus runner Cespedes to third bases. That set up the Moritz to Brown double play for the first two outs. Indigo Diaz (S, 3) induced a pop-out from Moises Castillo to end the game.
The M-Braves improved to 3-8 in extra-inning games and were aided by two-hit games from Miller and Malloy.
The fifth game of the series is on Friday at Regions Field. RHP Nolan Kingham (1-0, 1.50)) makes the start for Mississippi against RHP Norge Vera (0-0, --) for Birmingham. The first pitch is at 6:30 pm CT, with coverage starting at 6:15 pm CT on 103.9 WYAB, First Pitch App, and MiLB.tv.
The M-Braves return to Trustmark Park on Tuesday for the penultimate homestand of the season against the Tennessee Smokies. The series stretches from August 30-Sept. 4 and includes back-to-back fireworks shows on Sept. 3-4. For tickets and more information, fans can visit mississippibraves.com or call 888-BRAVES4.
