Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS -- The Mississippi Braves fought back from a 7-0 deficit, scoring four in the seventh and three in the ninth to tie the game and force extra innings Sunday night at Trustmark Park. The Jackson Generals plated two runs in the 11th to take a 9-7 victory and even the series at two games apiece. The series finale and rubber match is slated for 7:00 PM Monday.
Mississippi (2-2, 41-32) scored seven runs on 12 hits while Jackson (2-2, 33-40) plated nine runs on nine hits. Jose Peraza led the M-Braves offensively with a 4-for-6 day at the plate. He scored two runs and drove in two. Seth Loman also collected two hits and drove in two runs. Ketel Marte and Patrick Kivlehan drove in three runs each for the Generals.
Jackson took a 1-0 lead in the third. John Hicks walked and Jack Marder singled to start the inning. A fly out to right allowed Hicks to move over to third. Marte then delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Hicks.
Dario Pizzano walked to lead off the top of the fifth. Hicks singled and Marder laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Leon Landry followed with a RBI-single. Landry then swiped second base and Marte delivered a two-run single to make it a 4-0 game. After Julio Morban walked, Ryan Kelly came on to relieve J.R. Graham. Kivlehan blasted a three-run homer to left, extending the Generals lead to 7-0.
The M-Braves got on the board in the seventh. Kyle Kubitza doubled and Matt Kennelly singled to put runners at the corners. Gustavo Nunez followed with a RBI-single to right field. Peraza then delivered a two-run double to center, cutting the Generals lead to 7-3. Cedric Hunter walked and Loman singled, scoring Peraza from third to make it 7-4.
Peraza led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to center. Hunter then singled to put runners at the corners before Loman ripped a RBI-single to right, making it a 7-5 contest. Derrick Mitchell's sacrifice fly drove home Hunter to make it a one-run game. Kubitza then ripped a game-tying triple to center, forcing extra innings.
Kivlehan singled to start the 11th for Jackson. An errant pickoff attempt allowed him to advance to second. Paolini then doubled to right field, driving home Kivlehan and giving the Generals an 8-7 lead. Hicks then singled to center, driving in Paolini to make it 9-7.
Forrest Snow (1-1) worked two innings to pick up the win in extra innings. He allowed one hit and struck out three. Chasen Shreve (3-1) tossed two frames and took the loss. He gave up two earned runs on four hits while fanning three batters.
Neither starter factored in the decision. J.R. Graham gave up just one hit through the first four innings, but a rough fifth frame ended his night. He gave up six earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four batters in 4.2 innings of work. In his Double-A debut, Tyler Pike tossed five innings for the Generals. He held the Braves to just two hits and three walks while striking out two.
In Monday's series finale at Trustmark Park, M-Braves right-hander Mitch Atkins (1-0, 2.25) counters Generals righty Matt Anderson (2-2, 5.71). First pitch is slated for 7:00 PM. Gates open at 6:00 PM.
