
M-Braves Fall to Blue Wahoos 6-1 in Series Opener

PEARL, MS - The Mississippi Braves (25-36) were defeated by the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (25-34) 6-1 on Friday night in the series opener at Trustmark Park. M-Braves center fielder, Connor Lien led the way for the M-Braves offensively with his 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Lien finished the game with a HR, R and a RBI. For Lien, his home run in the bottom of the first inning of Friday night's game was his second in his last three games played. Lien also homered in the bottom of the eighth inning of Wednesday night's contest against the Montgomery Biscuits.
Lien put the M-Braves on top 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning after crushing a solo home run to left center field, his third of the season.
Pensacola took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning via a double from Shed Long followed by a sacrifice fly from Nick Longhi.
The Blue Wahoos collected their third run of the game in the top of the fourth inning when Chris Okey grounded into a force out, which allowed Narciso Crook to score, making the score 3-1 in favor of the Blue Wahoos.
In the top of the fifth inning, Pensacola added two insurance runs to their lead. Longhi drove in his second run of the game after lining a sharp single into center field, allowing C.J. McElroy to score. Brian O'Grady followed with a ground ball RBI single to left field. Long scored on the O'Grady single, extending Pensacola's lead 5-1.
The Blue Wahoos finished off the scoring in the top of the ninth inning by plating their sixth run of the game as Luis Gonzalez singled on a line drive to right field. Long scored on the single by Gonzalez and Longhi was thrown out at home by M-Braves right fielder, Tyler Neslony.
Pensacola starter, Seth Varner (3-0, 2.78) earned the win while Mississippi starter, Kyle Wright (3-7, 4.71) suffered the loss.
The Mississippi Braves and the Pensacola Blue Wahoos will meet again on Saturday night at Trustmark Park at 6:00 p.m. (CST) for game two of the five game series. RHP Touki Toussaint (2-6, 3.52) is scheduled as the M-Braves Saturday night starter. Pensacola will also elect to start a right-hander as Daniel Wright (2-3, 4.50) has been tabbed as the Blue Wahoos starter for Saturday night's contest. Promotions for Saturday night's game will include: Trustmark Super Sensational Saturday presented by Trustmark ($10,000 Dash for Cash and post-game fireworks) and Faith & Family Night.
