June 8, 2018 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS - The Mississippi Braves (25-34) were defeated by the Montgomery Biscuits (30-29) by a final score of 4-0 in the series finale at Trustmark Park on Thursday night.
Much like the previous four games, the Biscuits scored early and often. The Biscuits scored their first run of the game on a quirky play that involved a throwing error and a double steal by Brett Sullivan and Michael Brosseau with Thomas Milone batting. Sullivan scored from third base on the throwing error, giving the Biscuits a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Leadoff hitter Jake Cronenworth extended the Biscuits lead 4-0 in the top of the fourth inning after batting in three runs via a line drive double to left field. Sullivan, David Rodriguez and Milone all scored on the double by Cronenworth.
Montgomery collected an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning after Ryan Boldt singled on a sharp line drive to left field which allowed Cronenworth to score, making the score 5-0 in favor of Montgomery.
The M-Braves rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning but fell short after plating two runs. Travis Demeritte got the M-Braves on the board after smacking a two-run home run over the center field wall, his sixth of the season, with Alex Jackson on base.
Montgomery's bullpen would prevent the M-Braves from scoring anymore runs, resulting in a 5-2 victory for the Biscuits. Montgomery reliever, Eduar Lopez (5-2, 4.32) earned the win and Mississippi starter, Michael Mader (1-2, 3.58) suffered the loss. Montgomery's Cody Hall was credited with the save, his third of the season.
The Mississippi Braves will begin the second stint of their 10-game homestand as they welcome in their South Division rival, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Friday night. The first pitch for Friday night's contest is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. (CST) at Trustmark Park. Friday night's pitching matchup will feature M-Braves RHP Kyle Wright (3-6, 4.37) and Pensacola LHP Seth Varner (2-0, 3.03). Friday's game will feature Friday Night Fireworks presented by Steak n' Shake and WLBT3 On Your Side.
