M-Braves Drop Second Straight to Barons

Birmingham, AL - A back-and-forth ballgame early resulted in a 3-2 Birmingham Barons win over the Mississippi Braves on Thursday night at Regions Field.

Stephen Janas (1-4) allowed just three runs, two earned, on nine hits over six innings, taking his fourth loss in six double-A starts. Mark Blackmar (5-4) picked up the win, allowing just two runs on three hits over seven innings.

Birmingham (23-9, 56-45) scored first when leadoff hitter Tim Anderson hit a solo home run to start the Barons offense in the first.

Mississippi (18-15, 51-50) bounced back with two in the third. Matt Lipka hit a double to start the inning. Sean Godfrey laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Lipka to third. Luis Mateo bounced back to the pitcher, who threw out Lipka at the plate to keep the lead.

A batter later, David Rohm ripped a run-scoring double to plate Mateo to tie the game 1-1. KD Kang then ripped an RBI single for a 2-1 Braves lead.

Birmingham tied the game in the bottom of the third. Anderson led off the inning with a triple, and Courtney Hawkins flied a ball to left that was dropped by Sean Godfrey to tie the game 2-2.

The Barons took the lead for good in the fourth inning. Nicky Delmonico doubled to lead off the inning, and Keenyn Walker drove him home with a single for a 3-2 lead.

Raul Fernandez earned his fifth save, pitching a scoreless two innings for the Barons. Andrew Barbosa and Jason Hursh each pitched scoreless relief innings for the Braves.

The M-Braves and Barons square off in the fourth of five games on Friday night at Regions Field, with right-hander John Gant (0-0, 0.00) set to make his M-Braves debut against right-hander Frankie Montas (3-1, 2.38). First pitch is set for 7:05 PM CT.
