Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

JUPITER, Fla. - Left-hander Tyler Lyons threw a career-high seven innings to complete the first no-hitter in Palm Beach Cardinals (24-21, 53-61) history Monday night with a 10-0 victory over the Fort Myers Miracle (17-27, 51-63) in game two of a doubleheader at Roger Dean Stadium.

Lyons (6-3, 4.20 ERA) struck out a career-high eight hitters through the seven-inning game while allowing just one baserunner the whole night - a fourth-inning walk to Angel Morales. The 6-foot-2-inch, 195-pound southpaw has now won his last four decisions and is 4-1 with a 3.86 ERA since moving into the starting rotation in early July. He was selected by the Cardinals in the 9th round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft out of Oklahoma State University.

Although finishing the seven-inning game with the first no-no in Palm Beach history, Lyons is actually not the first Cardinals pitcher to throw at least seven no-hit frames this season. Righty Joe Kelly, who is currently pitching for Class-AA Springfield, took a no hitter 7.1 and 7.2 innings in back-to-back starts and Arquimedes Nieto took his no-hit bid into the eighth as recently as July 23.

Not to be overlooked in the nightcap was the impressive showing put on by the Palm Beach offense, beginning in the first inning with a Domnit Bolivar solo home run. Xavier Scruggs followed in the second with the first of his two homers on the night, another solo shot, and the Cards picked up another later in the frame on an error to leave it at 3-0 after two.

Kyle Conley began the huge third inning with a ground-rule double to left-center field and Rainel Rosario one-upped him with a RBI-triple to plate the Cards' first run of the frame, followed by unofficially the longest home run by a Cardinals player in Roger Dean Stadium history. Scruggs' shot, a two-run blast and his team-high 12th of the season, landed atop the Florida Marlins clubhouse beyond the left-field wall.

Robert Stock's subsequent single gave the Cardinals a combined team cycle with four consecutive batters, but Palm Beach was far from finished at the plate. Niko Vasquez reached on an error and Ted Obregon loaded the bases with one of his two singles on the night for Alan Ahmady and Adam Melker, who drove home runs with a walk and sacrifice fly, respectively. Conley capped the scoring just as he had started the inning with his second double to give Palm Beach a 10-0 lead.

Lyons would take care of the rest and secure the 10-0 no-hitter with a groundout to shortstop to end the game in the seventh. Scruggs led all scores with two homers and three RBI, Conley had a pair of doubles and two RBI, Obregon had two hits and Bolivar combined to go 3-for-8 with a homer and two RBI between both games.

Fort Myers' starter Pat Dean (2-5, 6.64 ERA) suffered the loss.

After dropping 2-of-3 from the Miracle, Palm Beach looks to the second part of its six-game homestand and welcomes in the Charlotte Stone Crabs for a three-gamer beginning Tuesday night at Roger Dean Stadium. Right-hander Arquimedes Nieto (1-3, 3.22 ERA) is scheduled to face a yet-to-be-named Stone Crabs pitcher at 6:35 p.m.
