Omaha Lancers News Release
Sioux Falls, SD - Alex Lyon registered 37 saves and the Omaha Lancers were a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill in preserving a 4-2 victory over the Sioux Falls Stampede Friday evening in front of 4,064 fans at the Sioux Falls Arena. With the win, the Lancers improved to 33-25-1 on the year and are now 5-2 this season against Sioux Falls. Omaha victory's coupled with Waterloo's 7-0 triumph at home over the Tri-City Storm means the Lancers are still one point back of the fourth and final playoff spot in the West. Meanwhile, Omaha remains six points behind the third-place Lincoln Stars who earned a 3-2 victory in Sioux City Friday evening.
Omaha grabbed the game's opening goal just over eight minutes into the contest when Tyler Moy sent to the top of the Stampede goal crease which was promptly punched in by Gage Hough for his 10th goal of the season. Ben Ostlie earned the secondary assist on the even strength strike netted 8:03 into the first period. The goal marked the 31st time in 59 games this season that the Lancers have scored first. Omaha is now 24-7 when netting the game's opening goal. The Lancers doubled their lead less than six minutes later when Moy unleashed a backhand shot from the left wing that rattled off the crossbar before settling in the Sioux Falls net. Drew Melanson and Dominic Racobaldo assisted on Moy's fourth goal of the year which came 13:48 into the opening period of play. Omaha then stretched its lead to a 3-0 advantage less than half a minute later when Hough snapped in his second goal of the period and 11th of the season. Matias Cleland garnered the only assist on the five-on-five conversion registered 14:14 into the first period, which marked the end of the evening for Stampede starting goaltender Charlie Lindgren after just six saves on nine shots.
Omaha added to its lead early in the second period when Grant Besse fired in his second goal in four games since joining the Lancers. Ostlie and Jake Bischoff assisted on the even strength strike netted 4:29 into the middle frame against backup netminder David Jacobson. The Stamped remained resilient though and made their first dent on the scoreboard 17:33 into the second period when Sam Rothstein slipped behind the Lancers defense before sliding in his 18th goal of the year. Ryan Siiro and Thomas Forgione assisted on the five-on-five conversion.
Sioux Falls then trimmed the deficit down to two goals just a minute into the final period when Dennis Kravchenko snapped in his 21st goal of the season. The unassisted even strength goal came 55 seconds into the third period and is as close as the Stampede would come despite outshooting Omaha 14-1 in the final frame. Lyon registered 13 saves in the third period and Omaha's penalty kill thwarted three consecutive Sioux Falls power plays preserving the win.
Lyon earned the victory in cage after 37 saves on 39 Stampede shots. The veteran goaltender is now 26-18-1 overall this year and 5-2 head-to-head against Sioux Falls. Meanwhile, Lindgren suffered the loss after just six saves on nine shots. Jacobson earned a no-decision after just eight saves on nine Omaha shots.
The Lancers are back in action tomorrow evening when they head to the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City for their final regular season meeting of the year with the Musketeers.
