Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

At one end of the rink, the Waterloo Black Hawks took control early and on the other, they prevented the Tri-City Storm from getting started during a 7-0 decision at Young Arena Friday.

The Black Hawks scored in all three phases during the first period, teeing off with a power play goal at 7:26. Zach Stepan lifted a wrister from the high slot over the right shoulder of Justin Quale. A little more than three minutes later, Pijus Rulevicius made it 2-0, tapping the puck into an open net while shorthanded after a takeaway behind the goal by Austin Vieth. Ian McCoshen capped the offense in the opening frame at 15:51, finding a rebound after a Ryan Papa-Mike Huntebrinker two-on-one rush and firing it home.

Waterloo kept rolling through the second period. Blake Winiecki rifled a shot into the net on a two-on-one rush created by a neutral zone turnover at 2:38. Then Papa delivered the second power play goal of the night with 4:30 remaining in a period filled with penalties. Handling the puck near the side of the net, Papa's centering pass appeared to go off a Storm player and across the goal line.

In the third, the Hawks sealed the win, adding to the lead when Tim Lappin found Huntebrinker coming into the offensive zone on a change. After the pass arrived at the front of the net, Huntebrinker went forehand to backhand to slip a shot in at 10:28. Taylor Cammarata completed Waterloo's big night with 6:11 remaining, scoring off a sharp-angled chance from the bottom of the right wing circle.

Cal Petersen was perfect at the other end of the rink. He made 27 saves for the third shutout of his USHL career. Waterloo outshot the Storm in every period and by a final total of 46-27 for the game.

Saturday evening, the Black Hawks complete their five-game homestand against the Fargo Force. Be one of the first 1,000 fans to Young Arena to receive a 2012/13 Black Hawks team photo, courtesy of Lincoln Savings Bank. For tickets, call (319) 291-7680 or visit waterlooblackhawks.com.
